Chuck-Will's-widows having a quiet moment together. They are members of the nightjar family (working on the nightjars, tryin' to make some front page drive-in news). https://martiniambassador.substack.com/p/someone-left-the-nightjars-in-the

I don't know from a nightjar owl from a burrow owl, but these are hella cute. With the wide beak, I thought they might be frogmouth owls, which are hella-ugly-enough-to-eventually-become-cute.

Nightjars, of all the birds in non-existence, are the most non-existent.

In the world is weird part infinity, I was looking up whippoorwills yesterday! Love them, love their calls. They remind me of my childhood and summer vacation at the beach. Thanks Martini.

Menotsure's avatar

I've seen these birds and heard their call on backpacking trips near open meadows once or twice not knowing what they were.

Thanks for the info.

Oh hey Martini, you love animals. If you also like fantasy animals and a good "coming of age" story you may like The Phoenix Keeper. Though the main character is in her late twenties, so a bit late coming of age. Maybe more accurate to call it a "figuring out who you are" story? Or ugly duckling story? The ending annoyed me as an introverted person, but other than that I enjoyed it.

That's a nice, peaceful picture. Thanks, Martini! We really could use some peace and quiet right now.

Last time we had a hurricane roll through here, I took the opportunity to run out and refill our birdfeeders during a break in the rain, figuring the little buggers would need help in finding food in all the hullabaloo. The wind was still hurtling through when I noticed a little nightjar huddled up at the foot of one of our yard walls.

I moved piece of heavy statuary to give him a little windbreak and went back inside.

I may not be reading Tabz this morning, as I’m still trying to figure out how those lovely birbs are controlled by Cuba.

But I hope others are having a good morning.

Did anyone else notice, the CDC said explosive diarrhea came from Taylor Farms lettuce, then the Taylor Farms CEO goes to the Whitehouse, then the CDC says wait, we don't know where the explosive diarrhea came from? Nothing stinky about that amirite.

Richard Gere, in a clip from an interview with The Associated Press last month — sounded off on the Trump administration dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development last year, slamming the president for cancelling most of its foreign aid programs on “day one” of his second term. "He keeps saying we’re the wealthiest, most powerful country in the world. Well, what do you do if you’re the wealthiest, most powerful? You help people. You help people who don’t have healthcare.”

Classssy Steven "The Hutt" Cheung replied: “Sorry, not going to listen to a guy that may have put a gerbil up his ass,” wrote Cheung alongside a snap of a MEL Magazine article addressing weird, long-debunked rumors.

I've thought about getting a bottle of Canadian Whisky in support of our northern brethren. But I know nothing about them. Any got an recommendations? I usually have a bottle of single malt Scotch around for such things (Macallan, Lagavulin, Balvanie, Glen Livet).

The last thing the head of the FBI should do is go to Moscow where there's a danger of compromising blackmail. Unless the compromising blackmail already exists and he's going there to get the latest orders from his handlers.

Alternative Dog's avatar

He's definitely going there to coordinate with the Kremlin on dirty tricks for the November midterm election.

Wait 'til someone tells him we won Cuba after the war with Spain. And the Philippines.

By rights, we can reclaim them. And we beat Germany and Japan in WW II. We should

own them too. Me wanting to visit Berlin has nothing to do with that. The Wall, Reichstag,

Checkpoint Charlie. The Jewish Memorial Museum is quite somber. They say.

And Tokyo with their public baths looks.....um....interesting.

Gutfeld! on Monday's "The Five" on Rep. Ocasico-Cortez: “I think she’s [AOC] an absolute genius,” he began facetiously. “I want to just read that quote again. I’m going to tell you why, OK? ‘We cannot afford to leave Tennessee behind, [Kentucky] behind, Alabama behind, Mississippi behind, Georgia behind, South Carolina behind.’ She mentions behind six times, and all I’m thinking about is her behind!” “She’s never had to explain anything, which is why almost everything she says isn’t memorable except for when she mentions her behind six times,” he said. The co-host seemed to be looking for a hearty response from colleagues — which he did not get."

My thought on the sudden new interest on tariffs is that they know they are losing this power after the midterms and they are cashing in before then. They also announced plans for tariffs on 90 countries this morning. As they say in the mafia, time to bust the joint out, you light a match.

Anzu's avatar

Nintendo announced they have no obligation to refund any tariff money to consumers. Which is true! Even if the US government is forced to pay them back, it's just extra profit to them at this point.

Enter Ranting's avatar

It's another way Trump is helping out the millionaires. Consumers pay the tariffs, and the corporations get reimbursed and keep the funds.

I’d like to nominate this for tomorrow’s tabs.

DHS/ICE didn’t use their BILLIONS to order more body cams until July 17 and July 20, even though I’m pretty sure one of the rationalizations/strings for giving them a giant pile of money was the requirement for all ICE agents to have body cams. Prior to this order, it appears they had only spent $75,000 on body cams in the last year. Only 3,000 of roughly 11,000 agents were equipped with cams.

I’m controlled by Finland. Cuba’s kinda warm for me.

(Not gonna lie the pickled fish did take some getting used to.)

I see the drooling orange moron is getting all tariffy again…

I mean, the guy was just always a not especially bright crook with letterhead. Stealing the US presidency seems mostly to have meant to him he could use White House letterhead. So yep demanding a bigger cut of everyone’s grocery bill to fund his tacky gold painted plastic habit, hey, on brand I guess.

Just put him and his in prison already.
