Actually what happened is George McGovern and later Jimmy Carter cratered so bad that the party had to come up with some way to keep the donations coming in. Was it right to turn to corporations? I don't think so, but I at least understand why it happened. The rise of the DLC is intrinsically tied to very public and historic failures of the 70's progressives.
