It's also because SI measures really suck for kitchen/daily life measures. Not that the legacy system that we use is particularly comprehensible, but it's a hell of a lot easier to figure out what the margin of error is when the units vary by a multiple of three, or four, or six than when they vary by a multiple of ten and many of the decimal multiples are so unusual that they aren't easily understood.
