Why the fuck did he run against Crockett? Is it because he's a white guy and she's a black woman?

Doktor Zoom's avatar

He declared his candidacy in September, and she joined the race in December, so yeah, he was probably both a monster and psychic.

Marycat2021's avatar

Like I would know that. I live in NY but hey, if you like personally embarrassing your readers, well, go ahead. There was no need for the sarcasm, dude.

Cooper didn't just squeeze out a win over the other 6 Democrats in his primary with 92% of the vote, he SMOKED the entire slate of Republicans COMBINED by over 133,000 votes. This tells us 2 things -- (1) Roy Cooper is the most popular politician in NC, and (2) Democratic voters were LOT more energized because the difference in turnout was substantial -- like 200,000+ more votes in the D primary for Senate than in the R primary. And Cooper claimed 133,000+ of those.

And while it is true that Roy's never lost a statewide election, that's true because he's never lost ANY election, full stop. Unless he didn't win Homecoming King or something while he was in high school. Dude just wins. He's the only challenger to unseat an incumbent governor in the entire history of the STATE. To be fair, thoguh, for much of its history NC didn't allow the governor to run for consecutive terms. From 1835-1868, the governor could serve 2 consecutive terms, but terms were only 2 years in length. It wasn't until 1977 that the state constitution allowed 2 consecutive 4-year terms, which Jim Hunt did first, and then did again after sitting out for the 8 years of the Jim Martin administration. Still, Pat McCrony stands alone as the only sitting governor to be voted out of office. (And I can't think of anyone more deserving of that distinction. God, that guy was useless.)

Ta, Evan. Yes, let's win it ALL in November.

I’m not surprised that Texas dems went with the white guy who speaks Fundagelical even though I was rooting for Crockett. I hope she has a political comeback soon.

I’m also not surprised that piece of shit Ken Paxton tried some fuckery.

Finally, I watched some MSNow and didn’t miss Kornacki one bit.

GrannysKnitting's avatar

i'm not upset about the win but at the same time i'm thinking 'of course they won't send the Black smart woman up' - good luck to Mr T and hope he nails their asses

I saw that race in much the same way as I did the one between Val Foushee and Nida Allam here for the 4th CD. I voted for Allam, but wasn't going to be unhappy with either of them. I chose as I did mainly because Foushee is more of a reliable vote, but not an initiator. I can't think of any legislation she's brought to the floor, much less gotten passed. (Doesn't mean she hasn't done it, I just never heard about it.) And there's a place for those foot soldiers, I just saw Allam as one more likely to attempt to move the needle. That race may well go to a recount, but it won't go to a runoff. The threshold in primary races to avoid a runoff is only 30% of there vote, and both Foushee and Allam were above 40% (so even under the previous threshold there wouldn't be a runoff). The recount for a non-statewide race is a 1% difference, and last I saw this race was closer than 1%.

A white guy runs against a black woman. Gee, what a surprise that he won. Fuck Texas.

I wanted her to win so that when Senate Goopers decided there had to be a talking filibuster to shut down DHS, they’d get a master class.

Marycat2021's avatar

I wanted her to win because she's a tough and intelligent woman who fights MAGA tooth and nail.

noname's avatar

Why am I not seeing ANYTHING about Gina HInojosa, winner of Democratic primary for TX governor? I trust this isn't another one of those "we think she has no chance, so we'll further ensure that she definitely has no chance whatsoever" by ignoring or patronizing her and only talking about her opponent(s).

Republicans in disarray!

Maybe's avatar

So, "a flawed, self-centered and shameless candidate." Isn't that part of the job description for any Repub pol these days?

Stephen St John's avatar

It should be clear to anyone with a brain by now that Rethugs try to keep people from voting. Sadly, MAGAts lack brains.

Observations from voting in Texas yesterday:

1. First, Dave Wasserman. I will NEVER forget attending an agricultural insurance convention in September 2016 where he was the guest speaker. He guaranteed Hillary was going to win and all we talked about was what agriculture and crops would look like under her. Ooops!

2. I voted in the local GOP primary yesterday for three reasons: (a) I had a friend running for an important office that I wanted to help, even though he's a (mostly pretty sane) Republican; (b) I wanted to vote against Ken Paxton; and (c) it was fun telling the election judges that I was a Democrat but wanted to vote in the Republican primary. You should have seen the looks I got! Some people even looked close to crying. It was glorious!

3. And I get to do it again in the runoff! Since I voted in the GOP primary, I can only vote in the GOP runoff. You BET I'm going to make sure all the Republicans in the room know I'm not one of them!

4. Of which there weren't many - Republicans, that is. There were three or four times as many Democrats voting as there were Republicans, and our district is (was?) very, very solidly red

5. For the Senate vote, it was so funny! I think there were 8 GOP goobers running but the screen could only show 7 names. You had to hit "Scroll" to see who was at the bottom of the list. Guess who was at the bottom? Adulterin' Ken! I actually laughed out loud, which is apparently frowned upon in the voting booths

6. In addition to the races, there were 8 or 9 "positions" that I guess are to be adopted by the GOP for their platform? Stuff like "We shouldn't send Texas's water to out of state entities!" and "Deport everyone!" and "Vote NO if you are against Sharia law taking over Texas!" Naturally I voted the opposite of what they wanted, so yeah - I guess I DID vote for Sharia law, LOL.

7. You probably won't get to see it unless you live in Texas but the World's Biggest Ass-Kissing Contest just started. Whoever gets Wesley Hunt's voters in the runoff is going to win the Senate primary. John Cornyn and Adulterin' Ken Paxton are going to get NASTY!

Per Item #5, the most common and acceptable activity in Texas voting booths is sobbing.

I'm sorry but I'm not sending Talarico any money. We have more than enough hyper-religious politicians already. They pray for rain, the drought continues, then years later the whole state floods.

James's avatar

Lookin’ at YOU Kristen Gillibrand!

Maybe's avatar

I'm an atheist, but I have no problem with religious beliefs as long as they are personal and not being shoved down anybody else's throat. (I don't think praying for rain actually causes rain.)

What I despise is all of the loud, HYPOchristians.

TalentNotAutotune's avatar

Yep. My reading of the Bible tells me that I should proclaim my faith but my prayers should be in private.

I'm a big believer in the saying, "I can't save you, only Jesus can" which means I can let you know who Jesus is but the rest isn't up to me so I'm not going to harp on it.

GrannysKnitting's avatar

i know right? they're just exhausting, and so committed to the bit!

TalentNotAutotune's avatar

His Christianity is not a problem (full disclosure: I'm a Christian too) but the fact that he cut and run last year could be an election-killer.

I was against the Democrats fleeing the state because first of all, they've tried that before and it simply cannot work - now or ever, but more importantly if I was running against Talarico, you can bet I'd call him a coward who ran from a fight about 1,000,000 times.

I honestly do not know how you defend running away from a fight that you absolutely, positively know that running away won't work, and you're going to lose the fight you ran away from. That was an extremely stupid move, IMHO.

Maybe's avatar

So you are going to help the Repub candidate by not voting for the Dem? I don't know if fleeing the state was a good idea, but at least it was ethical and made a strong statement. I don't think it did any actual harm. Electing the Repub will do harm.

TalentNotAutotune's avatar

How did you get from "I honestly do not know how you defend running away from a fight" to "So you are going to help the Repub candidate by not voting for the Dem?" What did I say to make you assume that?

Seriously, what makes you think I'd ever vote for a Republican in a general election?

Maybe's avatar

I didn't say you were going to vote for the Repub. I said that failing to vote for the Dem would help the Repub. I based this on these statements of yours:

* "the fact that [Talisco] cut and run last year could be an election-killer"

* "you can bet I'd call him a coward who ran from a fight about 1,000,000 times"

* "I honestly do not know how you defend running away from a fight that you absolutely, positively know that running away won't work, and you're going to lose the fight you ran away from. That was an extremely stupid move"

While you did not say specifically that you would not vote for Talisco, you strongly implied it. You made it clear that you have no respect for him and think he is a coward and stupid.

Posting stuff like that is in itself a problem; you should be chastising the guy you don't want to win--in this case, the Repub. Campaigning against the candidate you plan to vote for (if you do) is an own goal.

TalentNotAutotune's avatar

I guess you didn’t read that post closely enough. Those comments were related to the point that ***if I was the person running against Talarico*** that’s how I would campaign against him.

And that’s what I expect the GOP candidate/dark money to do. That’s going to be tough to overcome, because Talarico DID run away from a fight and there was absolutely, positively, unarguably no chance for his fleeing to work. It was a proven losing strategy. It was incredibly stupid to do it because: (a) it was guaranteed to fail (which, of course, it did); and (2) I don’t know where you’re from but in Texas, running away from a fight is a sign of cowardice. You might not like that but it’s a fact in Texas and Texas is where Talarico is running for office.

Of course I’ll vote for Talarico. But I don’t think he was the candidate with the best chance to win in November. Here’s hoping I’m wrong, wouldn’t be the first time.

As more and more elections swing towards ethical governance and fairness it becomes less and less likely that there will be more elections.

Trump Toots He Wants Whoever He Doesn't Endorse In Texas Senate Race To Drop Out

HuffPost: "The Republican Primary Race for the United States Senate in the Great State of Texas, a State I LOVE and won 3 times in Record Numbers (the HIGHEST vote ever recorded, by far!!!), cannot, for the good of the Party, and our Country, itself, be allowed to go on any longer," Trump wrote Wednesday on Truth Social. "IT MUST STOP NOW! We have an easy to beat, Radical Left Opponent, and we have to TOTALLY FOCUS on putting him away, quickly and decisively! Both John and Ken ran great races, but not good enough. Now, this one, must be PERFECT! My Endorsements within the Republican Party have been virtually insurmountable! It is such an honor to realize and say that almost everyone I Endorse WINS, and wins by a lot, especially in Texas! I will be making my Endorsement soon, and will be asking the candidate that I don’t Endorse to immediately DROP OUT OF THE RACE! Is that fair? We must win in November!!! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP"

James Talarico, Radical Left Opponent

Maybe's avatar

Only in red states would he be considered Radical Left instead of just a normal Dem.

josephebacon's avatar

He’s gonna endorse Paxton.

TalentNotAutotune's avatar

Absolutely. I'm worried that Talarico won't go there with respect to Adulterin' Ken's affairs and serial adultery.

A very very weak John Cornyn did and got more votes than Paxton, so that strategy is a good one. I'd keep it up if I was Talarico.

After 38 years of marriage, Mrs. Paxton divorced Ken – ON BIBLICAL GROUNDS!

TalentNotAutotune's avatar

Cornyn - not a black money group but Cornyn himself - had an ad where he said Paxton’s wife left him because Paxton cheated on her and now, Paxton is carrying on an affair with a married mother of seven.

Expect a whole lot more of the same.

I am pleased that the two Repubs will be gouging each other (and spending money) while Talarico can campaign for Senate.

I think I’d rather get Velshi in a divorce to be honest. I mean all the other parents think you’re so lucky to have such a handsome, smart boy like Stevie but you are secretly thinking “you can have him” because you know he’s a needy little pain in the ass. And stop calling me “Mommy”! The umbilical cord was CUT!

Absolutely. I just finished the Jon Stewart interview with Ali Velshi. Turns out Velshi's great grandad was a close pal of Ghandi.
