I just remembered a fake ad from MAD when Esso changed its name. "Nixxon: A New Name, But It's The Same Old Gas"

I used to drive by the pictured refinery on way to and from my job at a nuclear power plant. It is right next to an interstate highway. On the other side of the highway is a huge Dow Chemical plant. That part of my day was by far the scariest few minutes of my day, especially the morning I was driving by and saw a fire at the refinery (not the usual flares). I floored the gas pedal and got the fuck out there.

In 1984 a Union 76 refinery 15 miles from my house had a massive explosion. The whole house shook. I first thought that the garage door had fallen. Soon neighbors were out on the street asking each other "what the fuck was that?". Some large plate glass windows a couple of miles farther away shattered. 17 people were killed.
