Both, "Yup. They're still there."

The birdie absolutely knows what he's doing. A long time ago, I lived in a home with 2nd floor deck that had kitty doors to the inside. Predictably, my cats spent their daytime lives sleeping in the sun. Next door, the neighbors started complaining that one of my cats was taunting their dog. Dog barked for hours, and other neighbors complained. WTF - At the time I was working 10-hour days. I blew them off, mainly because they were always complaining and because I was just too busy to care. I worked home one day, and set my computer up on a table next to a window with a view of the deck. Mid morning, one of my cats sauntered outside, did a high-wire act balancing on the rim-railing, and sat down on the side closest to the neighbor's yard. A bit later, their dog ran over to their fence and started howling. Cat jumped down, ran just inside the kitty door till the howling stopped. As soon as it was quiet, cat ran out, jumped up on the fence and meowed, dog howled. Wash, rinse, repeat. Hey, I wear hearing aides so I just took them out and got on with my work. A few extra treats found their way into the cat bowl. A good time was had by all.

Except maybe the neighbors.

When I moved in, the neighborhood was all ranch homes built in the 1950s or legacy cottages dating back to the civil war. The neighbors had torn their ranch down and crammed in a 5,000 ft monstrosity. They spent their time trying to get other McMansion owners to organize and harass people with older homes - many of whom were extremely elderly. I figured that if they wanted to stop the dog barking either they should pay for obedience lessons or keep the dog inside while they were at work. My cats were doing nothing wrong.

I wasn't passing judgment; I was just observing.

It's a good thing the "tabs" pops up before it loops around to the beginning again, or I could watch it for half an hour and still think it's a live view.

Parakeet pops up, cat tail lashes. Parakeet ducks down, tail stops lashing.

No need to waste energy, kitty says.

William Donnell's avatar

Yes, the connectivity between cat and tail is routed through the base of the tail aka the Fat End (like a pool cue). When swinging a cat, always grab the fat end because cats have no problem reaching the skinny end with their pointy parts.

What is not well-known is who is in charge. It is the tail, which manifests its will through the cat. From ass revving to headbonking, the tail makes its calculations, decides, and transmits its will to the cat via the Fat End.

Martini Glambassador's avatar

I would never advocate swinging a cat, though!

Our cats love skritches at the base of the tail

No indeed. In fact, don't even touch the Fat End because that makes 'em crazy. I know, I know: short drop.

My parents bought me a parrot when I was kid. He was the smartest animal that I have ever

owned. He was also kind of goofy. My mom had him out of his cage to clean it and my dad came home, opened the front door and he went out of that door like a bullet, never to be seen again.

Demme Epstein Fatale's avatar

We had packs of thriving parrots (they were mostly escapees), in the wild in my old town.

Maybe he joined (and led) a pack!

Demme Epstein Fatale's avatar

This totally makes sense, because I saw them in Palo Alto, CA (Bay area of SF).

Thanks!

So sorry he flew the coop.

I would occasionally bird sit an Amazon Red of ~65 years. You'd have needed dynamite to get him out of the house...

They are terribly smart and not afraid to hold a grudge, either...

James's avatar

Looking at how poofed out that tail is, that cat is running at the red line! Cinnamon used to poof like that, which was more noticeable with her than most because she was so slender that her porcupine act practically doubled her size.

Damn, I miss that cat.

Sleepmonger's avatar

One night I heard the worst caterwauling in the tree outside my front door (rip tree :( ) and went out to find a neighborhood cat facing off with a possum. I have never seen a cat so poofed up from head to tail before, its eyes just huge black pupils. Like it'd been blow-dried and electrified. It reminded me of a Far Side strip. Meanwhile, the possum was just looking at it calmly, like, "Why are you screaming at me? I was just sitting here. Jeez, chill, dude. Bah, I'm leaving, you're an idiot."

James's avatar

If ours are sitting on the screen porch when the deer come to do the landscaping, they get all agitated — puffed up, and in that butt-wiggle-attack-mode (as if a housecat is gonna bring down even a small deer). But apparently they need this release else they go crazy(er). And it’s kinda hilarious to watch.

Yes I am still here birb.

Mamdani looks like someone trying to remember an old high school classmate's name at a reunion. "Mason? No... Too Founding Fathers-y. Macon? No, we definitely would have nicknamed him Bacon. Mahon? Does anyone still name their kids Mahon? Wait, it might be Mahon. Ah well, I can probably get away with calling him Big M, anyway."

Also, JD Vance is obviously THE dude to stumble ass-end into a joke and just as quickly lever himself out again. But I'm here to say I'm definitely part of the fart left. (Not to be confused with the dirtbag left.)

Daniel O'Riordan's avatar

Fart left! Oh my God! I peed myself a little laughing so hard.

That Vance guy. He's funny. Clearly, he should have told those donut store workers a joke.

Treatments for Cancer include (but are not limited to):

Surgery: knives and other sharp things used to remove the tumors. A patient must sign multiple waivers and legal permissions to keep medical providers from being arrested for ASSAULT WITH DEADLY WEAPONS. Copious drugs administered to keep patient from just dying on table. Long recovery time needed. Monumental risk of things going wrong and patient life span being shortened.

Chemotherapy: Infusion of toxic chemicals to slow down and stop growth of tumors. Varying effects upon entire body. Monumental side effects. Drugs administered to control side effects. Chemo patients sneer at the tiny needles used to administer vaccines and laugh at PAB crybabies who fear vaccination.

Radiation: Controlled and directed use of the part of the energy spectrum that makes FUCKING NUCLEAR WEAPONS the most dreadful thing on earth. You think those xray techs wearing body armor look funny or are exaggerating? You are wrong to do that. They know what the fuck is happening there. Well cancer treatment with nuclear radiation is WAY WORSE. They burn holes right into you. Plenty can go wrong.

Anyway I recommend that the cancer of fundamentalist evangelical christian fascism receive ALL THREE of these approaches in addition to one final approach which is .....

Clinical Trial of Experimental Medicine: Our bible thumpers would make good guinea pigs for a range of treatments involving all kinds of mad scientist stuff.

Kryptonite? Sure! Why not? Moonshine made from magic mushrooms? Can't hurt! Let's ask Doctor Victor von Frankenstein XXIII what he recommends!

I jokingly used the term "vacationmaxxing" with my visiting goddaughter from Paris this summer, and she immediately leapt onto the subject of Clavicular's visit to Paris, where he was utterly humiliated by Parisienne women who could size him up long before he could even articulate the first syllable of "nanosecond." Goddaughter, 22, could not stop laughing at how deeply abysmal his failure there was.

"Gerard Baker, the editor-at-large of The Wall Street Journal delivered a scathing assessment of the president in his latest weekly column:

“Yes, I’ve found much that is repellent in the man’s character and rhetoric,” Baker acknowledged in the essay, headlined “Help—I Feel a Bad Case of TDS Coming On,” while explaining why he initially believed that Trump in office was necessary. But Baker said he was “sorry to have to report that I have now self-diagnosed with a virulent form of TDS,” which has “steadily progressed over the last year from Trump disappointment syndrome through Trump disillusionment syndrome to a full-blown case of Trump dismay syndrome.”

Baker unleashed a lengthy catalog of his grievances with Trump during his second term, taking aim at what he described as the president’s “self-indulgent tariff fixation,” “insouciance about public finances,” the war with Iran and “grotesque self-enrichment,” among other issues."
