This has a whole verse about anglerfishies: http://www.familyopera.org/drupal/sites/default/files/2012_Science_Festival/Performance/12LT-v13_LivingLight-Broad.mp4. Yes, I'm in the picture at the end, but I won't tell you which person I am. My kid's there, too.

:)

There's so much more where that came from. My favorite of all of them is Lake, about the evolution of cichlids as the African lakes they lived in merged and divided (http://www.familyopera.org/drupal/sites/default/files/2018_Web_of_Life/18WoL-Performance/18WoL-13_Lake.mp4). The composer thinks it's the most romantic song he's ever written, and it amuses him that it's about a fish. The animation was created after the first time we performed the song, and it was not easy to have live piano and percussion, live singers who couldn't watch the animation and the animation all in sync for this performance.

For contrast, you can hear the same songs the first time we performed them at http://www.familyopera.org/drupal/Lifetime2007.

EDIT: I finally found the animated short I was looking for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY3MZ_wNFW8. FURTHER EDIT: There's an anglerfish in it that I never noticed in all these years!

Thank you for the sea monster.

Also thank you for the insight about the original juvenile delinquent, Icarus, who flew too close to the sun and paid the price.

He'd been warned. Those wings were held together with wax. The wax melted. Icarus fell. The model of FAFO.

So....how might this old myth have relevance for a certain world's richest man these days? Every one of those old myths distilled the essential stories that hundreds of generations of mortals had experienced. When they warned each other about the dangers of flying too close to the sun, using Icarus to spice the story up so that it would stick, they were just talking common sense.

British singer Joe Jackson's 1997 album "Heaven and Hell" has a cut (the last one, I think) that tells the story of Icarus. The great Dawn Upshaw is also on that album which deals with the "seven deadly sins."

“Margin Call” is a great movie for many reasons, not least of which is the bankster honchos realizing they screwed themselves royally by firing Eric Dale (a great job by Stanley Tucci) and cutting off his email and cellphone so they can’t find him.

Well, that's weird. Let's just say I'm past my full SS retirement age, and I have just stumbled across details of a painful medical condition - but not painful enough that I ever brought it to the attention of my doctors - I apparently have silently suffered from since adolescence. I was prompted toward the resources that led to this understanding by tracking down clues in a trivial aside from a 90's sitcom whose reruns I've been watching. There's no cure, but there are strategies for managing it better than I have been. Better late than never, I suppose.

"New York Congresswoman Introduces Bill To Make Trump's Birthday A Federal Holiday

Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.) wants President Donald Trump's birthday to be a federal holiday.

On Friday, the New York congresswoman introduced in a news release what she called "Trump's Birthday and Flag Day Holiday Establishment Act," which would "permanently codify" June 14 as a federal holiday called "Trump's Birthday and Flag Day," according to the release.

Referring to Trump as the "founder of America's Golden Age," Tenney added that he should join George Washington in having his birthday celebrated as a federal holiday."

Ta, Marcie. Ta, Martini. Our local protest, at the courthouse in the nearby university town, was canceled for bad weather. That's okay, there's plenty to do around the cabin, and we've already had our fruit bowls, tea, and elitist avocado toast and are currently sipping delicious, strong black coffee. Good day, beloved Wonketteers. I love and appreciate you all and I bless us all with love, health, peace, and grace.

Please, please stay safe. Wear a mask or two (I believe I was the only person masked at the Widespread Panic concert), wash your hands, sanitize when you cannot wash and let the sanitizer dry completely, take Vitamin D, get a booster shot when due and catch up on any other vaccines you need, avoid indoor and crowded outdoor gatherings and when you must meet, remove masks only to eat, drink, and take quick photos, and stay the fuck away from me and everyone with whom you do not share a roof. Do this because you love yourself, and because I love you, too. Do this in memory of dear departed family and friends like Forever 27 Treg and heroic Tony, Holly's pilot friend, among over seven million dead worldwide. Do this to honor the nurses (good morning, beautiful Wonkette nurses!) and other frontline medical personnel, particularly ICU Hera Mrs Land Shark RN. Be kind, especially to yourself, and please stay safe.

Not like I want them digging around in personnel records, but everywhere I've worked (and managed payroll) we've had contact info available for ex-employees, if only to forward the W2 after the end of the year.

Sure, their work email was stopped (usually put on suspend, not altogether deleted as their emails are part of government records we are required to keep for potential public disclosure and legal reasons), but not only are their personal contact info in the digital payroll record we're required to keep for many years, but we have their job applications and employee info forms (usually filled out on the first day of employment) stored both digitally and, for some years afterwards on paper.

Which is all to say: there's bullshit going on in here.

Expand full comment

What are the odds that they are sooooo stoopid that they super-deleted *everything* to do with those employees? Like deliberately got around any safeguards that I'm sure are there to prevent people from accidentally deleting records that need to be retained?

"Elon’s Department of Government Efficiency Department That’s Not a Department oops posted classified data from National Reconnaissance Office, the federal agency that designs, builds, and maintains US intelligence satellites, great!"

These assholes need to be prosecuted for this - if even a person who held the proper security clearances revealed what they "oopsied", they would have been arrested.

Hell, the government didn't even acknowledge the existence of the NRO until 1992 ( when it had been established in 1961 ). I remember when there was quite a kerfluffle in 1994 when the NRO "secretly" built a new building in Chantilly, VA - and WaPo and the Washington Times both revealed that the building was meant for the NRO ( the agency itself may been declassified, but such details as locations of it's facilities were still classified ).
