I wonder exactly how "deleted" the info was, because there are basic requirements for records retention. I can see the Gov being fucked in former employee lawsuits if they can't provide information to counter claims against them.
Not like I want them digging around in personnel records, but everywhere I've worked (and managed payroll) we've had contact info available for ex-employees, if only to forward the W2 after the end of the year.
Sure, their work email was stopped (usually put on suspend, not altogether deleted as their emails are part of government records we are required to keep for potential public disclosure and legal reasons), but not only are their personal contact info in the digital payroll record we're required to keep for many years, but we have their job applications and employee info forms (usually filled out on the first day of employment) stored both digitally and, for some years afterwards on paper.
Which is all to say: there's bullshit going on in here.
What are the odds that they are sooooo stoopid that they super-deleted *everything* to do with those employees? Like deliberately got around any safeguards that I'm sure are there to prevent people from accidentally deleting records that need to be retained?
