Back in either the 2012 or 2014 cycle, I saw where someone had used intensity of tint (so going from pale pink to fire engine red, palest pastel blue to royal) to indicate population density. I wish that that had caught on, because I'd bet that the blues would stay pretty intense, while the reds would tend to wash out (the one map I saw was national, and it was kind of striking that there just weren't very many intense red places, but there were enormous regions shaded pale pink or pinkish pastel violet).
