Back in either the 2012 or 2014 cycle, I saw where someone had used intensity of tint (so going from pale pink to fire engine red, palest pastel blue to royal) to indicate population density. I wish that that had caught on, because I'd bet that the blues would stay pretty intense, while the reds would tend to wash out (the one map I saw was national, and it was kind of striking that there just weren't very many intense red places, but there were enormous regions shaded pale pink or pinkish pastel violet).

The main thing that I knew about McCain before his 2000 campaign was that his name was, with Feingold's, on the campaign finance reform bill that seemed to be our belated first step toward a modern political system.

Later, Citizens United happened, and I wept for my nation.

I recall that when the Vietnamese 'boat people' refugees were settled in Texas, there was a lot of racist yelling and some criminal acts. Things eventually worked out.

Um, didn't Florida have a primary? And didn't that Florida primary select a Republican candidate for Senate? Does that guy still get to run, or does he have to just fuck off because Lord Boofoo Rubio has Made A Decision?

It took a while, but yes. That was a much bigger mass immigration too. On the other hand, they were refugees from Communism, and many of them were Christian, so they had a free pass for everything except the stealing-our-jobs part.
