In some of the farming areas of California, it works to pull applied water into the ground, into the aquifer. When that applied water contacts fertilizer, particularly imprudently large amounts of fertilizer, or even farm animal manure not purposely being used as fertilizer, it carries nitrates into the aquifer. The nitrates then make their way into drinking wells where they can cause a host of health problems, notably lack of oxygen "blue baby" syndrome. The wells of entire small communities have been ruined by this legacy from the past.
The livestock and fertilizer industries have carelessly, and lazily, polluted virtually all subalpine waters in the Lower 48, if not the entire globe. That's certainly the case on western public lands...in addition to the juniper chaining, predator extinction campaigns, and their constant whining about how deer, elk, pronghorn, bighorn, etc are stealing 'their' forage. As if all that weren't bad enough, 'ranchers' have become the most cantankerous subpopulation in the American West, usually mischaracterized as "rugged individualists." Always perceiving themselves as under threat. Always complaining about 'virementlists' and 'gubmint.' Always looking for a showdown. They form the bulk of right-wing nutjobs out West. Pulling guns on BLM rangers, staging Bundyesque showdowns, slashing tires and threatening pretty much any official, sheriff, or land manager within reach. I can't believe how society tolerates their bullshit, thanks to the Hollywood Westerns myth.
They should make it so the heads of these companies have their water supplies taken directly from the waters they're polluting. That'd get them to fix things up pretty quickly.
My dad has been a Clean Water Act expert for environmental groups since the 80s. I followed in his footsteps. I cannot express how much it hurts to see all of his good work coming undone. I was talking to someone earlier about how the people wanting to get rid of the regulations think we don't need the regs because "everything is fine." They don't appear to remember, and most are old enough, when rivers burned and fish and wildlife died or couldn't thrive at all.

Just when you think it's fixed, the GOP comes along and reinvents stupid.

It was always Romneycare. Opponents re-branded it because of that black usurper in the White House.
Uh, most waters, and fish, wouldn't pass much stringent testing. Chances are your fish were raised in a hatchery.
