From what I understand, a not small portion of the RE's downfall also had to do with their military not keeping up with their overexpansion of territory, so they had to enlist local goons as mercenary soldiers. But unless you click the link and (try to) read the piece itself, you have no way of knowing how truly, truly terrible the writing itself is. Here is a wonderful, which is to say terrible, example:
