Do you think that the fact she killed herself at age 17 might have had anything to do with this?

And this wasn't Romeo and Juliet. It was Romeo's granddad and Juliet.

I made the mistake of reading the source article. Now I can spend a few hours calming down.

There's this concept of an "unreliable narrator", which I'm pretty sure Nabokov knew about.

The diversion was probably because the kid had offed herself, Prommie. Hard to get a conviction without a witness.

You're trying too hard to make this okay.

In what country and what century were your great-grandmothers made child brides ? Do you really think they had any choice in getting married at that age? Does the alleged age of Romeo and Juliet (set in the16 th century btw as in a long fucking time ago.) make selling female children as wives to adult men? AND WTF DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH A TEACHER TAKING ADVANTAGE OF A VULNERABLE PERSON UNDER HIS SUPERVISION ?!? I don't care if she offered to suck his dick to get a passing grade, a REAL MAN (or woman) does not use a child sexually.

Yeah, that was the result of a colossal fuck up by the prosecutor. It had something to do with the specific language in the charge. It was also not a jury trial otherwise I think the guy would have been strung up by his balls (in was in Connecticut). It was the douche bag judge that decided letter of the law was more important than the crime that was committed.

His violations of the mandated treatment program weren't older than their chronological age.

Yeah, she wanted it so bad she killed herself because it happened.

But it would be ok if she was twerking - right?

No? Not even then?

Sorry - my bad.

Never mind...

No, I haven't. On the other hand, I teach high school. I am trying to imagine what shitstorm would erupt if a male teacher my age was fucking a grade 9 student. I don't care how "mature" she appeared (and honestly, in 25 years of teaching I have yet to meet a 14 yr old who could be considered capable of making this decision), he's the goddammed adult and he NEEDS TO ACT LIKE ONE.

By the way, yes we now have an age of consent of 16 here in Canada- but with this exception: "However, the age of consent is 18 years where the sexual activity "exploits" the young person -- when it involves prostitution, pornography or occurs in a relationship of authority, trust or dependency (e.g., with a teacher, coach or babysitter). Sexual activity can also be considered exploitative based on the nature and circumstances of the relationship, e.g., the young person's age, the age difference between the young person and their partner, how the relationship developed (quickly, secretly, or over the Internet) and how the partner may have controlled or influenced the young person."

Romeo and Juliet not a particularly good example of a "healthy" relationship between two 14 year olds. That said sure, I really have no issue with teens fooling around in a consensual manner with each other either, nor do most people here, I think?

The problem here centers around him being her teacher in addition to her being so extremely underage. That is in fact part of WHY several states (apparently not Montana) have a separate level of review for cases where the accused is in a position of authority over the victim, to distinguish between those cases and ones where both parties are still teenagers and one just happens to be on the wrong side of the "line" previously established by the law. I myself was still under 18 when my girlfriend in high school turned 18, and clearly there was no rape involved there, but that really doesn't related to this case at all.

"Baugh said Moralez’s death complicated the county attorney’s ability to prosecute Rambold. After Moralez’s suicide, the prosecution and defense reached an agreement that Rambold would enter sexual-offender treatment. If the former teacher completed treatment and complied with other conditions, the case would have been closed."

So...because he initiated a predatory sexual relationship with a student and as a result she took her own life...he gets to plead out to treatment instead of going to real prison for years as he so clearly deserves?

Seems like there was a systemic failure somewhere in law/prosecution of this case before you even get to this judge's somewhat awful commentary in the ruling.

Know of any Boutique Web/Software shops that need someone with a couple decades of experience in UI design and rollout? Also general web/web app design and coding?

Seriously. I swear that if someone were to offer me a job today, I would take it and be gone within a month...

Might feel differently tomorrow.
