FWIW, I watched entire episodes of the early seasons when they first aired, and you are right about there being a lot of misses.
But it seems to me that the hits were bigger in the early years -- maybe because of cast, maybe because of novelty. E.g., you can only invent Rosanne Rosanadonna once.
