The press hated McHale who did okay, but nobody remembers last year when Conan O'Brien's material was bad/mediocre while the audience laughed hysterically.

I think it was rather cruel to put up Colbert for comparison with McHale. Colbert looked like somebody who tells jokes for a living. McHale looked like the uncle who's supposed to do the warmup for the best man, and starts "unaccustomed as I am to public speaking".
