I heard that when he was located by LEO's he told them that he no longer wanted to murder his CO's so they let him go. The complete picture is muddled by the fact that patient/client privilege now belongs to next of kin or designated person when he entered the facility on a 5150 hold (clearly extended by the psychiatrist since he was there more than 48 hours). When a patient elopes from a hospital while on a hold, LEO's are supposed to bring them back to the hospital. Don't even get me started on the idea that LEO's have the authority to write holds (or not) when dealing with potentially mentally ill persons. They dump mad/sad drunks in the ER all the time! Well, the white ones who present as middle class. By the time they have a BAL low enough to clear them for a psychiatric evaluation, they don't even remember getting to the ER. If a patient is on a hold for "danger to others" especially when they have named the "others," that patient should be transported back to the hospital; not just let go. It totally burns me up that as a mental health professional, I am restricted to when and where I can write a 5150 hold and arrange direct transport to a mental health facility, but LEO's with no psychiatric evaluation education can write them at will. I am a manager at an outpatient mental health facility; I have completed the course to be able to put people on a hold; but only in my capacity as a "crisis specialist" when working for the company that covers after hours as a contractor for Placer County Mental Health. Long-ass rant; mental health system is broken, yo?
If Flake, McCain, and Corker had anything resembling testicles, they'd caucus with the Democrats to force their fellow Republicans to face this menace.
