I would like to propose that all male judges be reequired to excuse themselves from any law suit involving abortion or any aspect of women's health on the ground that their are ignorant peabrains.
This shit infuriates me. I just read an article about the J6 victims in the House and how genuinely, and legitimately afraid they were for their lives during the riot, and how afterwards during the count 140 Rethugs voted *anyway* to contest certain states' electoral counts. Then I read one about one of the cops who killed Elijah Mclain got 14 months, the other acquitted, and 5 weeks of community service. Then I read one about Colorado suddenly allowing xtian preschools to be included in a state program and receive state $$. How the fuck am I supposed to live in this twisted, fucked-up country anymore? Seriously, I'm studying options for an exit plan if Biden loses. Every rethug fucker can go pound sand. Assholes.
I have dual citizenship and and EU passport. If things go south, I don’t see any alternative to putting my house on the market and getting out of the country. I know how stressful those four years were and I don’t think I can go through that again. I think it’s gonna be a lot worse this time.
That's awesome! I've been hanging in here mostly for my Mom (who will be 86 soon) and my kid (who's 26), but at some point I'm going to have to live my life for myself. I'm so happy for you that you made the move and it was the right one for you.
I remember years ago in CA they were trying to get a parental consent for abortion in the case of a minor child’s pregnancy. My response to the person who was gathering signatures was “old enough to get pregnant, old enough to decide what she wants to do about it”.
On the matter of abortion. Abortion is a medical procedure. Doctors (M.D.'s) do medical procedures. Doctors are trained to do medical procedures. If you were trained at great expense to do something, and the state you live in said "NO!", would you consider moving to another state? If you were choosing a state to work in, would you consider a state that said "NO!"? Do you believe that a state with fewer OB doctors is a better place to give birth?
To everyone getting their asses handed to them on the abortion issue and are now desperate for a compromise that everyone can live with, we had a compromise. It was called Roe v. Wade. You shitcanned it.
Abortion is a medical procedure, and the only people who get a voice in the matter are the patient and the doctor. Everyone who believes the soul enters the body at the moment of conception can just fuck off.
I don't believe in "beliefs". I am fucking sick of hearing peoples' opinions, cuz that's ALL a belief is, on how the rest of us should live our fucking lives. THEY are the party of "Live like I want you too"; WE are the party of "Leave us the Fuck Alone". Jeesuz H. m-effing kryst.
I certainly do not wish it on this minor but it would be quite ironic if she were a daughter of parents to talked about the evils of abortion. Because, truly, when it starts to affect THEM, on then do they give a shit. I hope that that child gets adequate care.
Fuck all these assholes~!~
ETA: My FL sis (2 X abortion winner) who claims to research everything, did not know what viable meant when we were discussing that years ago. She actually bought into the abortion of live fetuses at 9 months crap.
Holy crap can you imagine what that girl's parents must be like that she went to court to be allowed not to tell them? But please, Judge Thomas, go on about their "right to care for" her.
We teachers even have to weigh whether going to parents about a kid's asshole behavior is going to go one way or the other once they're told. (It sometimes leads to more abuse, and hence more shitty behavior.) Teachers have impossible jobs, but of course I can't expect to collect ALL my STRS + SSI money, can I? NOooooooo... can't have that *much* $$ for retirement.
Being a teen and pregnant is SCARY. If a teen felt they could SAFELY tell their parent(s) they would do so. I assume the judges are aware of that so this is them just figuring the kid deserves whatever happens to them for having sex outside of marriage.
Suppose there was a teenage girl who got pregnant and wanted to have the baby, but she knew her parents would try to pressure her into having an abortion. I wonder what take the "pro-life" people would have on "parental rights" then.
It is not hard to see which is the better of those two choices for people who want/need an abortion.
Is it the BEST choice? No. But the best choice isn't on offer, so you take the win you can get.
It sounds like you'd rather they try for "with no restrictions" and lose, (and be able to say "well, at least we tried for perfect") then later try for some lesser choice, like say 18 weeks. And in the meantime, 4 years have passed, untold women have died, or been forced to birth children they either don't want or their families can't afford, or have been driven closer to poverty by trying to scrabble together money to travel out of state to get care. And the GOP has moved the goalposts by passing some bullshit law that says "medically related constitutional amendments need a 79% majority to pass and be added to the constitution" ... or some other stunt they'll try to deny the will of the people.
It seems outrageously selfish of people who don't live in Arkansas to criticize those who do for going for a win that is all they think they can get at this time. Make no mistake - codifying an 18 week ban is MILES better than trying for perfect and losing.
Once they get the 18 week ban in place, when you can see you don't have the support for anything longer than that at this moment in time - THAT is when you circle back and try for perfect, not before.
Gee. I wonder if the Florida child didn't want her parents to know because one of them might have been the father? Not saying that's what happened, but it's not an unlikely scenario...
Yeah, 18 weeks is useless to people with medical complications. You would have to opt for early screening (not always offered, let alone covered) to even be aware of a *potential* problem. So it’s as if they also think that people are too stupid to understand that there are reasons for abortion healthcare besides “hussie.”
“Let women die rather than have medically necessary abortions”, yeah that’ll help court the women’s vote. God job Republicans 👍 you don’t even need to worry about the Democrat’s ineptitude, you’re killing your party off all on your own aren’t you?
It will prove hard to gerrymander women out of districts with men since most households contain both women and men, and the single person households that do exist predominately are located in multi family buildings.
I would like to propose that all male judges be reequired to excuse themselves from any law suit involving abortion or any aspect of women's health on the ground that their are ignorant peabrains.

I left in '87 and never looked back. In hindsight, one of the smartest moves I ever made.
Where did you go, if you don't mind sharing? In any case, congratulations on your excellent foresight and judgment. I am envious.
I've been living in Germany since 1987 and haven't regretted a minute

thank you Robyn for doing this every week. I always send it to all my social media friends. Amazing how much stuff we just dont know is happening
You should check out Jessica Valenti's "Abortion Every Day" substack she tells you very move the Republicans, a/k/a "forced-Birthers" are making.

I read her Guardian stuff and her other social media. Thank you for this link
She does nothing but abortion, so she is the best at it. I wish everyone would read her, tough though it is to read some of the fuckery.
To everyone getting their asses handed to them on the abortion issue and are now desperate for a compromise that everyone can live with, we had a compromise. It was called Roe v. Wade. You shitcanned it.

Yes, those who can tell their parents, do tell them.

One has to wonder if the decision may have been influenced by skin tone of this young lady.
Suppose there was a teenage girl who got pregnant and wanted to have the baby, but she knew her parents would try to pressure her into having an abortion. I wonder what take the "pro-life" people would have on "parental rights" then.
Of course this happens in a world of 8 billion people.
JFC People. Arkansas has a binary choice.
"Available never" vs "Available up to 18 weeks".
It is not hard to see which is the better of those two choices for people who want/need an abortion.
Is it the BEST choice? No. But the best choice isn't on offer, so you take the win you can get.

Florida on the cusp of adding abortion rights amendment to 2024 ballot - POLITICO https://www.politico.com/news/2024/01/05/florida-abortion-rights-amendment-00133938?cid=politico_post
We have the signatures, but our state A.G. Ashley Moody is being a dick, pretending using the term "viable" is "confusing".
That Florida decision .... how to say "Minors are chattel of their parents" without using those exact words.
All daughters young and old are chattel. We're back to the ownership thingy.
Gee. I wonder if the Florida child didn't want her parents to know because one of them might have been the father? Not saying that's what happened, but it's not an unlikely scenario...
You'd think that she would just claim "incest" and see how quickly they capitulate (lie).
Yeah, 18 weeks is useless to people with medical complications. You would have to opt for early screening (not always offered, let alone covered) to even be aware of a *potential* problem. So it’s as if they also think that people are too stupid to understand that there are reasons for abortion healthcare besides “hussie.”
I'm pretty sure they think exactly that. I'd go a step further and say that they're among that group.
“Let women die rather than have medically necessary abortions”, yeah that’ll help court the women’s vote. God job Republicans 👍 you don’t even need to worry about the Democrat’s ineptitude, you’re killing your party off all on your own aren’t you?
Except "gerrymander" and "electoral college"...
It will prove hard to gerrymander women out of districts with men since most households contain both women and men, and the single person households that do exist predominately are located in multi family buildings.
I bet many women, esp red state/family ones, are pressured to vote the way manliness asshole patriarch bubba want's them too.
GOP to women (in the very near future): "Nice right to vote you have there, would be a shame if something were to happen to it"
