When someone finishes their sentence we say they have 'paid their debt to society.' Restoring their rights and privileges should follow thusly.

As a sexual assault victim advocate, and a former volunteer doula for teen mothers, whose partners were 75% over 21, please allow me to clarify that statutory rape is indeed rape for excellent reasons. Just as in other hierarchical situations, like teacher/student or boss/employee, yes, it's possible for it to be more complex in theory, yet in practice it overwhelmingly is simply abusive. Even when that abuse is subtle or primarily manipulative it is consistently there and working to the older person's advantage.

I guess my question is, would you stop them voting because they couldn't pay you?

We say it, but we have a long history of showing we don't actually believe it.

If someone has finished their sentence, all of the fines and fees should be considered paid in full. Or the old-school Republican way, get an actuary in there to calculate what the time would have been worth if the incarcerated had not been in prison. If that is more than the fines - boom, paid in full. If there is any doubt, remind the actuary of how much Dennis Muilenburg's time would be worth, bet that would cover it.

I get that, but I also think that unless there is a MAJOR age disparity that makes it more of a child molestation situation the person is genuinely considered a threat, they should not have to be on the sex offender's registry for the rest of their lives, after they serve their time.

There's a big difference to me from a 40-year-old having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old and a high school senior who just turned 18 continuing to date the same freshman he was dating the day before, or a 21-year-old having a one night stand with a teenager who had a fake ID and was in a bar. The latter two, if they serve time, they serve time, but they shouldn't be on the offender's registry.

I went for 2 weeks years ago and hit the whole state from Tampa on up, never got to Miami or the Keys.Went to Jacksonville for a football game and dayum, that's the rowdiest crowd I've ever seen. Scary actually.

The latter two are basically mythical, though, statistically.

I was a 14-year-old dating a 17-year-old, and I'm definitely aware that some asshole parents have tried to use statutory rape laws to stop their kids from pursuing relationships they didn't like. But for the most part, the law itself and then those enforcing the law are a barrier to hurting 18-year-olds like that. Romeo and Juliet laws are pretty reasonable.

And I'll grant you that a 21-year-old meeting a girl in a bar doesn't expect the Statutory Rape Inquisition. However, the vast, vast majority of 21-year-olds who are or could be arrested for statutory rape know their partner is not of age to consent- typically under 16 or 17 in most states.

I cited 75% of the teen mothers I worked with (all under 18) having the fathers of their children over 21. That was a statistic from the government agency I volunteered through.

Letting people vote after they've served their time is just so ... democratic.

I'm in the part you missed, Sarasota, a charming town that has the John Ringling estate and Art museum.Jacksonville has a large Naval base and is, shall we say militarily inclined.

There is a sex museum in Miami also. I'm on the West coast, the south end of Tampa Bay.

Sex museum, wt? Who got the first ____ ___?That's where we flew in, something like Treasure Island and stayed right on the Gulf Coast side. Ate some gator with my then GFs racist AF grandpa. I fixed his fence and shower and all sorts of little things, then he kindly berated me for not marrying his granddaughter.

I'm from SoCal and the Atlantic is so much more turbulent and churned up than the Pacific. At least where I was.

The WEAM World Erotic Art Museum, I believe they have the largest collection of phallic art. http://www.weam.com/ The Atlantic definitely is more rough. The gulf is pretty nice though. I lived in So Cal for a few years, and loved it, I miss my many friends there and it is one of the few places where I fit in politically. I love the weather here in FL and I have family here transplanted from Maine, Where I grew up.I am hoping that when the boomers get to retire, they will outnumber the racists. The cities are more blue than the panhandle.
