"The Florida Department of Education has been no help at all; after releasing the conduct rules, it has left school districts and their attorneys to guess at what’s allowed and what isn’t, leading administrators to say they must “err on the side of caution” to avoid getting sued, which could result in heavy fines and loss of teaching credentials."
That's the fun thing about being vague as fuck and willing to fuck people up. They'll just "err on the side of caution", making them do your dirty work for you while you pretend that's totally not what you said.
Just north, in Sarasota County, my wife and I were high school librarians in the 1970s. Even then, local Baptisits thought they had the right to censor our libraries. So glad to be long gone from Florida..
I'm waiting to hear about all the high school students asking if Romeo is bisexual because he loves Mercutio.
And what about Nurse? Why isn't she married? Is she lesbian and hiding it b/c she lives in Renaissance Italy? Or is she asexual?
I want students to raise their hands and fill every bit of available instructional time with the teacher's dogged insistence: "That's not a question I can answer. You should ask your parents that question."
Like Doc I have non-fiction questions. J. Edgar Hoover's books (e. g. Masters of Deceit) and biographies (ok if no mention of Clyde Tolson?) and Casimir Pulaski biographies or any mention of American cavalry during the revolution?
I *would* ask the question, if you're removing all books with any mention of a gay character just because they could hypothetically be interested in having gay sex at some future point... all heterosexual characters could *also* be interested hypothetically in having heterosexual sex at some future point, so doesn't that mean we have to just remove all books with any character whatsoever, to err on the side of caution?
I would ask that, but I'm not going to, because I don't want to give them any ideas.
They have to. If words mean anything at all, anyone with a sexual identity (presumably nearly everyone) falls into a category that warrants removal from the libraries.
So if a teacher finds that a student has brought, say, “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” to read during silent reading, is the teacher supposed to confiscate it? Is the teacher supposed to give it back? It’s bad enough teachers are supposed to strip out any and all LGBTQ+ content from the school’s books, but are they supposed to police a student’s personal books?

DeSantis needs to be DeAd.
It occurs to me that any class of 30 kids is likely to have a gay kid or two
Who will keep that a deep dark secret if they know what's good for them.

Better get rid of any history book that has James Buchanan in it. And don't get me started about Socrates.
FL is making certain I (and allies like me) never visit again, and I have friends and (part-time) family there.

And gotta remove anything about Alan Turing, who was key in helping the Allies win WWII.
They already removed all the Shakespeare. Keep up.
There is no such thing as gay, so why are people so scared their kids will learn how to be gay?
Considering all the hetero material in the average school library, it's a wonder all the gay kids don't turn straight.
Oh wait, no it isn't.
The nature of fascism is to make laws so vague and punishments so severe that everyone must "err on the side of caution". And here we are today.

Oh, bugger off, Florida government
I vote Bert and Ernie are aces who share a 1bedroom apartment because they don't make much on their rubber duckie business
I always took it for granted they were brothers who had to share a bedroom, Bert about 9 and Ernie about 6
which would also work.
Heterosexual is an orientation... Are they gonna erase all humans from the stacks too?

I guess they have to ban all the books written by far right pundits, as they are clearly overcompensating for more than a few things.
This bodes ill for "Matt Schlapp: His Story for Young Readers."
So J. Edgar Hoover becomes J. Edgar Who?
Honestly, this is state-sponsored child abuse.
