I disagree. It is perfectly reasonable to call out a company for tolerating sexual assault. The flight attendants can and do deal with assholes on a play. They have the legal authority. Being in a union does not get the flight attend out of this.

Can I get you another margarita?

I am glad that you had an excellent experience. I was preferred on United, they have a direct flight to the left coast. I changed airlines. I will change plans multiple times a year to avoid that airline.

I became friends with two United flight attendants soon after that-- they lived near me. They told me that the reason there are flight attendants on planes is to get passengers off the plane in case of an accident. Each year they have to go through certifications for that. They were both in their forties but they were so nervous about that test because it was so stringent. What had happened to my family they didn't even discuss with me, because it was so normal. Maybe airline has changed but at that time I think it was part-owned by employees, and they were proud of it, it's maintenance routine etc. Tho all agreed the pilots were jerks. Tho one of my friends was married to one.

Roger (Federer) said today that he was "hoping we could get back to" stadiums where they could be at least 1/3 or 1/2 capacity ... and my first thought was "What happened to all that love of the game stuff? Also? I don't remember you not loving to perform when all it was was practice and there was only ONE stand full of people pushing each other almost out of the stands to see you do your thing.

I mean, Roger is a Leo, so it doesn't surprise me that he would say something like that :-)

And to be fair, I'm sure Rafa has been more levelheaded about it (even as Babolat has a shot of him practicing) because he had a whole Academy to run, so he had to stay calm and dignified and unflappable for the kids, too.

I just feel what you're saying because I have memories of things like people's dumb heads blocking my shots when I was trying to photograph Rafa when he won his Career Golden Slam at the US Open

I am glad that you have friends who like their jobs. I gave up status and moved to another airline because United has consistently bad customer service. All flight personnel are trained for emergency support, it is their core task. Their secondary task is customer service. That Delta and American personnel are so much less likely to insult passengers and has fewer documented incidences of violence against passengers does not make them less good at emergency services. In my experience, United sucks only slightly less than Southwest. I will take an indirect flight to avoid them. I am glad you have had positive experiences. Lots of people must have had such experiences, because they are still in business!

Right. It's about the snacks.

Not at all about the fact that they failed to intervene in an ongoing sexual assault.

Exactly. The snacks are irrelevant. That was the point I was making about the original article, and I'm glad we are in agreement. To say that I was indifferent to "the fact that they failed to intervene in an ongoing sexual assault" is a very cheap shot. I said, and may I quote, "The flight attendants screwed up". There are thousands of flights a day, or at least there used to be. Inevitably, on some of them the flight attendants are going to blow it big time. Fine, call them out. But they have a difficult and crappy job, and I was extremely troubled by "Perhaps they were too busy blocking the aisle with the bland snack tray so no one could use the bathroom." Which struck me as a smear on flight attendants in general. As I said, they are unionized workers, and they work damn hard while being persecuted by some of the most vicious corporate monopolies in the country. And I would have thought that a left wing site would have more respect for workers than that, even if some of the really screw up sometimes, as do we all.

I like ‘bus’ a lot for ‘aircraft.’

Here’s a usage example from real life. I was flying on Airline X with a group that included a bigshot from Airline X. So the bigshot strode up to the gate attendant and asked with aplomb: “Is the bus here yet?” Inside, I was howling with laughter because I had never heard this before. If I think of any others, I’ll append this post.

‘Toe tag’ is a keeper as well—thanks!

Duly noted; the academic clarification is very much appreciated.

I misread that the first time. Bumpy landing.

Okay, I'll humor you.

Think of the most revolting human being you know. Give them a bottle of booze. Strap yourself in an airplane seat and surround yourself with people who don't give a damn what happens to you, and staff the plane with people who feel the same way. Now. Imagine that person polishes down the bottle and turns on you, overwhelmed by lust, and if you resist them in any other way than polite verbal requests to leave you alone, you will die.

Also, in the process of assaulting you, they put you at risk for dying of Covid. Nice times.

Thank god that I don't have a reason to get on a plane anymore.

I’m happy to oblige.

Moar capitalization pedantry.... It drove me nuts when coworkers wrote ‘NAAC’ for sodium acetate. It’s a deicer in wide use at airports. We have applied many many loads of NaAc over the years. I tried and failed to coax my coworkers into writing the more-correct ‘NaAc.’ What’s a pedant with chemistry credentials to do? Disclosure: they did not have any relevant training. I didn’t learn ‘Ac’ as an abbreviation for ‘acetate’ until organic, but still....

By the by, I think Dame Ethyl Alcohol would be a spiffy drag name (not my thing, however). Dame Edna would be my muse, possums. It had never occurred to me until now. Abbreviates to ‘DEA’ for some added snark. Classier than Babbling Brooke, methinks. Why not insist on a proper title?
