I cry "FAKE!"

Buying and selling Food Stamps under the table?

We do realize, don't we, that the SNAP program doesn't use any ACTUAL FOOD COUPONS, right? So there's nothing to "buy" "sell" or "trade" there. The only way to transfer some or all of your SNAP benefit for the month is to sell your EBT card. But then if you do that, you have no way to get your benefits next month or thereafter. And that the state or county will just invalidate that card while also suspending you from the program.

So, not a very good deal for either party in the transaction. Which means that pretty much NO ONE EVER DOES THIS.

Oh, and by the way, that same EBT card is also used for your Medicaid, TANF and WIC benefits. So recipients guard them with their lives and do not sell or trade them, because they will lose a whole lot more than just a one-month SNAP benefit amount. And the recipient will absolutely get sanctioned; that's a guarantee. And to top it all off, the card will be worthless to boot because it will be immediately invalidated. Hence the street value for stolen or illegally-transferred EBT cards is about equal to an R-Wingnut's credibility.

So nice try, tcot fucktards.

*The only things that are encoded on the EBT card's magnetic strip are the card's unique serial number and a security code. The serial number is associated with the account number of the recipient that it was issued to, and the recipient uses that same card for all benefits during the entire duration of his or her eligibility. It isn't like a subway card, which contains an actual encoded monetary value. The recipient's monthly benefit resides on the state's computer system, in the form of binary ones and zeroes. When the card is swiped at the point of transaction all it does is signal the state's computer to debit the recipient's account by whatever the amount of the transaction was and to signal the merchant's bank to credit its account by the same amount. No tokens, coupons or physical cash are ever involved at any time. So there is literally nothing in the card itself that the recipient can sell or trade to someone else. Because of these features, the state instantly knows and keeps track of exactly when, where and for what purpose the card is being used each time, and the system can pretty quickly detect whether or not it is being used by the actual recipient. Take my word for it, the use of these cards is very closely monitored and very frequently audited by the issuing authority.

Why can't they just ask their parents for food?

And some money to go to college, buy a house, and start a business, while they are at it.

Lazy.
