You really don't think they'll do Purple Hearts?

See, the thing is, we don't operate under Sharia law. There's probably a fitting punishment for him under the Law West of the Pecos, but we don't operate under that either.

Obviously, he should walk to court AFTER he's been drawn and quartered.

Still too soon?

Actually, I guess I was just thinking about the dead ones.

Hey Dok, this is a little late to point it out, but "tangential connection to reality" implies that there is actually a single point of contact with reality. That may be a bit optimistic in this case.

In a better, more civilized world, Hasan would be dragged daily through the streets by a Humvee...

I wish these wingtards would make up their minds: do they want Sharia law, or not?

Shoot, as taxpayers we are all paying for the upkeep of those people in Gitmo, many of whom we knew were not terrorists but we can't let them go now because they possibly became terrorists because we tortured them for a decade and no other country wants them. We won't even let them starve themselves to death to escape the Kafka-esque situation we created for them and no one wants them in the United States because they may all use their super powers to escape supermax prison and fly above our cities spreading sharia germs.

Ya know, he's not that far from Ted Nugent's house. That would keep Ted entertained for years AND make him an excellent GOP candidate.

Seriously, at this point I doubt that we can release those poor fuckers, because of the excellent chance that we've turned them into terrorists. If somebody did that shit to me, I'd certainly be thinking about payback. (I'm speaking of the ones who we now pretty well know were not terrorists to begin with).

All I could think of would be to upgrade Gitmo to the Village, and let outsiders come to visit and/or live with them. This would be a pretty shitty substitute for real life, but it would at least be an approximation. And this will never happen because it would cost money.

Oh for fuck's sake.

This is, for realz, the first time I have felt that the Prez really does not understand how something works. The mortgage bubble/meltdown was NOT caused by Fannie and Freddie "buying mortgages, knowing that if their bets went bad, taxpayers would be left holding the bag...". They contributed to it, but the vast majority of the bubble was caused by bank-generated mortgage-backed-securities, based on bullshit loans created by those very banks. F&F had a MUCH smaller percentage of liar loans than the major banks.

The amount of bailout for F&F was far smaller than that for the big banks, if you properly include the trillions of credit the banks got from the Fed discount window.

AGGGHH.

Okay, after reading some more, I see that there is some politics involved here. Obama may be giving up F&F to satiate the RW, in hopes of getting some controls put on exotic types of mortgages. But, I still hate it, because (1) he is again giving something up at the start of the negotiation, so he may never get what he wants; and (2) he is conceding the moral high ground to the assholes. The management of Fannie and Freddie was way less than perfect, but they were nowhere near as destructive as the motherfuckers running Wells and BAC and Goldman, and fuck it makes me hyperventilate.

... People on the left hold differing views of President Obama. What unites us is agreement that he is unquestionably better than either of the alternatives that have been on offer, and an appreciation for the fact that he seems to be, in everyday life, an admirable person.

What tends to divide us is speculation about just how far left of his public center-right persona is his "inner nature". With respect to civil liberties and executive-branch transparency, I'm afraid I've long since dropped to "at least he isn't any worse". On the definite plus side, he isn't crazy for new wars, and he still supports the idea of a social safety net. It's hard to tell where he really stands on the complicated subject of environmental stewardship. And, of course, the Republicans have made it impossible to get any idea of what he actually thinks about industrial policy.

This initiative, including the misplaced rhetoric about Fannie and Freddie, leads me to very nearly conclude that he is as thoroughly sold out to Wall Street as any Republican. (The cherry on top will be Summers to the Fed).

Please don't get me wrong. I don't think Obama is evil because of this. I think he genuinely believes that the continuing health and prosperity of our financial sector is critical to the well-being of the nation. I just disagree with him about how much deference those fuckers should get.

Give the non-terristy types a couple hundred grand, a passport, and a house near a suburban mosque, and let 'em take it from there. (The NSA would happily contribute a cell phone and internet service.) It would cost us a tiny fraction of what we're spending now.

Quick test of your wingnut logic -- which of the following is an "occupational hazard" for men and women in the U.S. Military:

(a) Getting raped by your brothers in arms, or (b) Getting shot by an islamic militant.

Hint: Remember to use wingnut logic, or you'll never get it right.
