My son worked through college and took some credits at community college at a third the cost of a 4-year college. He graduated with about $40,000 in debt, which is about 2250 hours of work at the jobs he can get, and about what I paid for a house in 1996.
The real problem is the cost of college, and the fact that employers require degrees rather than vetting or training employees on their own dime. The overall financialization of the US economy, and the imposition of the corporate management model on higher education are having exactly the disastrous effect predicted when it really got going in the 1980s.
It's always the same with these clowns, for them the only government money that helps the economy is that which comes from tax cuts, somehow it just looks, folds, and spends differently.
