These concrete thinkers are also magical thinkers. I grew up in their midst but never could figure them out. They do not understand cause and effect - bad things happen because God is mad at us. If they are secular RWNJs, then bad things happen because the evil liberals want to hurt decent people because the libs are evil.
Among other things, these folks cannot tell the difference between normative and descriptive assertions, even when it's explained to them. Describing X, in their minds, makes X that way. Therefore, we can't claim that the pandemic will take hold. In their minds, predicting that is the same as wanting it to happen, or even just the speaking of it makes it happen.
