I have definitely recommended that a certain person(s) be the witness for a corporate rep deposition, even if they aren’t in a top management role.

The most important characteristics of a corporate rep are that they fully understand the topics they are testifying about, and that they are smart and able to retain critical information. Note also that it’s possible to designate different corporate reps: for example, Witness 1 testifies as to topics 1, 2 & 5, and Witness 2 testifies as to topics 3, 4 & 6.

Sounds like you did a great job under stressful circumstances!

I have done and I will continue to educate young women in my field about certain workplace truths that will help mitigate (but not eliminate) the abuse from companies:

1. HR is not your friend. They are there to cover the company's ass.2. Document every problematic interaction with either a followup email to people involved, "Let me clarify the main points of our meeting, X said..." or simply send email to yourself with a timestamp documenting what just happened.3. Get IN WRITING (email/Google doc) your duties and exactly what's expected of you, and do a weekly status report linking to deliverables to show how exactly you are fulfilling your duties.

When I was working for a major tech company, there was a high level manager there who was absolutely sh*tty to every non-male, especially if they were older. It took over a dozen of us women documenting his bad behavior over the course of 4 years, and a couple of us threatening legal action, before they would fire him. He tried to retaliate (bad performance reviews, demotions) to those of us raising the alarm to HR, so we knew HR was ratting us out to him.

Women and non-white folk have to do twice as much work, and twice as much time documenting everything, merely to stay employed. As for respect for the work we do? It's a crapshoot. A universal problem, though, is that even good teams and companies hate anyone who raises a complaint, even a justified one.

She may not have been paid as much as the boys around her but she was still paid. She cashed the checks she received from an employer who disdains her extra X chromosome; an employer who beat the drum to overturn Roe v. Wade; an employer that regularly belittles certain politicians BECAUSE those politicians are women and a media outlet that regularly features religious moralists who do not want her holding any job except "brood mare", wet nurse, cook, maid and housekeeper.

So fuck her. If it was possible for both parties to lose in all this that would be my favorite outcome.

I find that women in particular suffer retribution simply for not being willing to give away free nurturing and if they won’t act as their boss’s therapist. They get targeted quick because people have expectations of women to have a certain demeanor and to fulfill a certain social role. When you break those expectations, even well-meaning people experience it as them being rude, or unfriendly. They say you are being disruptive and not getting along with colleagues. They feel alienated. I’ve experienced that in so many different jobs in different industries.

That’s not even the misogyny! It’s crazy how different our experience in the workplace is and how it’s still ignored. It took me way too many traumatic jobs before I finally started playing bureaucratic hardball. My work driven ethic had led me astray for far too long. I didn’t at all understand when some of my older female colleagues would “play stupid” or “lazy” when it was their turn in the barrel. I just wasn’t strategic. I didn’t realize I needed to protect myself.

I'm a cis-het white male and I've chosen to stay working for companies where I've been submitted to abusive conditions. One of the big ways our version of capitalism works is that everybody feels that if there isn't a guaranteed safe place to land that it's too risky to jump.

And I, too, tried to play "straight" and not "politics" for far too long. It's never wrong to protect yourself. My bills don't need to be paid less because I have a vagina as opposed to a penis. I don't know anyone elses who do. However, I've had a lifetime of being told how sweet I was, how generous, how hardworking, all ultimately often at my expense and the benefit of others usually male.

But know this, people: Every bad job I ever left, no matter how much I missed the money or the work, was worth it quickly. NOTHING is worth your life or your health or your self respect.
