Hodgson doesn’t sound like a great guy, but I do feel for him. I can’t imagine how terrifying it must be to be in the middle of your own struggles with PTSD and alcohol, when suddenly the friend you’ve been relying on to be a steady, sensible influence flips out while driving and punches you in the face. He tried really hard to do the right thing and protect his community despite his own burdens, and I do commend him for that.
My personal opinion is that private ownership of firearms should be rare and heavily regulated. Like…all guns have to be permitted, you can only get a permit if you have proof that you have been trained in safe firearms handling and basic marksmanship, hunting rifles only, and people have to keep their ammunition locked away in a separate location from the gun itself. I like the Japan model.
But that’s never going to happen in the US and people will keep dying because our society values the Second Amendment rights of the few over everyone else’s right to exist without being turned into ground beef by an AR-15.
I saw a video online, of an American teenager describing the culture shocks she experienced moving to Australia. Among swooping magpies and people grocery shopping barefoot, she included...the absence of metal detectors and active shooter drills at school.
My Scottish friend messaged me on Instagram after our most recent school shooting wondering when our Dunblane moment would be. I had to educate them a bit on the NRA and how even with Wayne LaPierre gone nothing will ever change. It was a very depressing conversation.
Allowing everybody in an entire society to walk around carrying a deadly weapon negates the whole point of living in a society. It's right back to "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." I guess that's how some people like it.
If that\s how they listened to a male military veteran warning them about a potential threat, imagine how much less attention they give to women telling them the same thing.
"They declined to confront him, fearing that would “throw a stick of dynamite on a pool of gas,” according to video released last month by the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office."
And then decided, yep, this dude should have all the guns.
Hey Mr Hannity, if you want to impress us with your machismo then how about going through with the waterboarding? I've been waiting an awful long time for you to prove it isn't torture by how bravely you would respond. Come on, Sean, you're the tough guy, right?
"Last summer, Hodgson picked up Hodgson from the mental hospital"
Hodgson was suffering from multiple personality disorder at the time.
Jeezus please us, if we are ever down to relying on Lumpy to protect us we will be in a very bad way.
Ta, Dok. Thanks for the Maine Coon, and it's always the fucking guns.

Moar cat pix! They're the only bright side to this kind of story!
This is why "mental health" is not the answer to gun violence. Nobody believes someone is crazy until they start shooting.
An independent report, prepared after the shooting, described the guy who tried to warn authorities about it as "alarmist" and "over the top"?
That might be a big part of the problem.

Welcome to Australia.

Absolutely fucking horrifying.
My Scottish friend messaged me on Instagram after our most recent school shooting wondering when our Dunblane moment would be. I had to educate them a bit on the NRA and how even with Wayne LaPierre gone nothing will ever change. It was a very depressing conversation.
That's pretty much what the NRA recommended, back before right-wing assholes hijacked the organization.
Allowing everybody in an entire society to walk around carrying a deadly weapon negates the whole point of living in a society. It's right back to "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." I guess that's how some people like it.
They've played enough video games and seen enough Mad Max movies to be certain they would come out on top.
No doubt. And maybe some of those westerns where guys keep crashing heavy-looking barstools over one another's noggins, too, and emerging unscathed.
Dok, you've done it again. Great article!
If that\s how they listened to a male military veteran warning them about a potential threat, imagine how much less attention they give to women telling them the same thing.
If cops had to check every sketchy guy with a gun, they'd be doing their fucking job.
Good Heavens! What you are suggesting sounds a lot like work!
"They declined to confront him, fearing that would “throw a stick of dynamite on a pool of gas,” according to video released last month by the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office."

WTF
They went to the same cop school as the Uvalde cops.
I’m not sure there’s enough standing around for that.
Very true. But standing around to avoid confronting a dangerous guy who might be armed is at least the basics of Coward Cop 101.
The solution is always "moar guns" when you ask an ammosexual.

SIlly Wonket. "See something, say something" only means "report protesters, expressions of dissent, or the presence of non-Caucasian skin tones."
