Under the Vacancy Replacements Act, if a person resigns from a Senate-approved position, they must be replaced by someone who has already gone through Senate confirmation. The position can't be filled by a recess appointment or any other shenanigans the Orange Shitstain might come up with.
So, one of Wray's deputies takes over, until a new Director is confirmed by the Senate.
Wray's resignation was, in fact, a giant thumb in the eye of You-Know-Who.
