I have an interesting take ... Fukui probably has one as well. My take is: the creative parts of software development: design, user experience (UX), and user interfaces (UI) cannot be done by AI. It simply isn't designed (right now) to be creative. So the entry level coders who wrote "rote level" code are basically done. But not the creative and clever people ... who, interestingly enough, tend to have WOKE DEGREES from university. Huh.

IT jobs are being cut just about as much as admin jobs were cut a decade ago.

And as with the admin jobs, it is gonna fall on everyone else to pick up that slack. I dunno how many man hours we waste trouble shooting printer shit or doing purchase orders but it is enough that it goes down on our monthly reports now

I am planning on making a linocut based on a tattoo of a starling that I saw. For me, starlings are the symbol I have chosen to represent Rome, and I think the iridescence* of their wings is going to allow me to play with combining print and watercolour.

This got me to looking on google books for a book about starlings, because I also really like reading books on the cultural history of various animals, and it was then that I found out that apparently starlings are just totally hated in the US.

*probably not the right word

agony's avatar

Invasive species tend to be hated, for fairly good reasons. I've seen people with purple martin houses check them and kill the baby English sparrows that have nested there. It's very odd to see a "bird lover" throw a naked nestling onto the ground and step on its skull.

Expand full comment
Bill Door's avatar

They're all over the place in NYC. They love imitating the local birds--there's a colony of redwing blackbirds that nest nearby every spring/summer, and the male starlings just go off the deep end trying to replicate those distinctive calls. Male starlings are excellent mimics, but they never get this one quite right--if you grew up around redwings you can tell the difference. I don't hate them, but I prefer cardinals and robins.

Expand full comment
Daniel's avatar

To be fair, I think most species find it incredibly tempting if they're in New York to at least once shout "I'm walking here!". Starlings are no different.

Not sure why you read about em being hated in the US though, that is a new one on me. Blackbirds get a bad rap, but they are not the same. Unless it is because of their invasive presence here

There were very few books about them, as opposed to books with "starling" in the title (usually gothic romance), and those books' descriptions all included a phrase akin to "these fucking things are just horrible invaders in the US and everyone wants them dead, their families dead, and to burn down their nests, go over and piss on the ashes, but this book will explain the interesting details of these horrible bastards".

There were no books from European authors, except for said gothic romances.

And she's an educated person who understands environmentalism.

But I am not coughing, they say. Test anyway, gotta be careful around your dad.

It is the covids. Thus far, youngest, hubby and I are negative so there is the silver lining thing.

Protocol is not what it once was: Apparently if there is no fever, they are allowed at work with a mask on.

We all got boosted up last winter so expecting this to be a mild shot and just hoping to mitigate the spread.

What we gonna do next year when there is no booster?
