Who knew that one way of avoiding a polar bear attack is to throw a bunch of dead leaves on the ground in front of them? I mean, it does mean that one has to carry two packs, one of them quite large, BUT STILL.

Special Request!!!!

Martini, a new friend at work moved here to Jacksonville because his wife is a zookeeper. I learned today that she was one of the two people that organized World Coati (Coatimundi) Day which will be on December 3rd.

is there any way you can have a Coatimundi for your Tabs gift on that day this year?

I love coatis & will get cracking on one.

Probably a longer explanation than you need, but I’m right now doing a bunch of gifs in advance because I’m going to be traveling for Thanksgiving and then afterwards to Italy (!!), where I’ll be on 12/3. So it’s going to be a bit of a scheduling juggle to get the timing correct, but I’ll try my darnedest to have whoever is posting on the 3rd choose that one.

Also, also too… if your zookeeper friend ever wants to send some video my way of the various zoo babies in her care, I’d be happy to take a look :)

I hope that’s not a wildlife park you can just wander around in, because those are polar bears. It looks so incongruous seeing them playing in green grass and leaf piles.

These giant apex predators are serious about their social time and their recreation...

I admire their priorities.

Aaaand we've put them on the run. Should humanity survive, it ought to be with great shame over how we've treated our fellow creatures

Every year on Thanksgiving and Christmas I see the the TV stories about mobs at the airports, cancelled flights, being "snowed in" and so on. Every year I thank God I don't have to catch a flight from Atlanta to California, my last "holiday" out west was my Mom's funeral. Good luck to those who have to fly for whatever reason, like breaking Grandma's heart.

People in here crowing about Obamacare. Not being denied for pre existing conditions and no lifetime cap were meaningful. 19k in insurance for a family of 4 some years ago, not so much. Why do you take crumbs and act like it's a feast? Why? Too scary to think there's no caregiver looking out for you? It is scary, and depressing. But living in reality might get us better results. Height of COVID terror she stood there in front of her freezer that very literally cost more than many yearly salaries and gave thanks for ice cream. Not art, not her family, not health care workers, etc etc. Ice cream, expensive, in a 26000 (twenty six thousand) dollar freezer.

I only heard about Teen Vogue in the last year (Being neither female or a teen) yet it seemed like they were doing a lot of good journalism that other publications weren't doing. So this calcellation (folding into Vogue) makes me wonder what was a return on investment for Teen Vogue? Was it breaking even, making money, making more money than Vogue or was that just another bending of the knee to the orange shitgibbon?

They would often have very good articles, plainly better than most out there. I'm 60 and still in my pajamas, so I definitely read the articles. It's a swing right for Conde Nast. Vogue is not going to suddenly start having actual political articles. I wonder if that's part of why AW left.

Ya know, so much is happening that I haven't even been able to get around to Chuck Schumer's shitty, mealy-mouthed "I voted, now leave me alone," quote. Fuck yeah, it's past time for Chuckles to go. WAY past time. I got bitched at for saying that about La Pelosi, yesterday, and I LIKE Pelosi. I don't like Chuck. Not even a little. Chuck, Nancy announcing her retirement right now was a message. TO YOU.

As for MYG...yeah, I'm willing to let her redeem herself, a little. Let's be clear, here. She will never be a Democrat, a liberal, or even a good person. So what? Right now, she's good for the country. Right now, she is one of the last on my long, long list of Republican Congressmen I'd yeet into the Sun if I could. And I say this as my state prepares to yeet Republican Congressman I like even better, with my wholehearted approval. David Valadao may be almost a Democrat, but he caucuses with Fascists and that's reason enough to end his Congressional career, now that the opportunity has arisen, and with extreme prejudice.

With votes, of course. I'd love to see a second act in Valadao's political career, as long as it happens in California and does not help fascism.

Nobody has yet announced for my new district. I got cornfused the other day and threw some Ameros at David Pan who announced for the new District 3 thinking I'd still be in 3, but now I'm in District 5, which makes us at best disposable to the left, if not completely sacrificial. I'm used to having hard right reps, so nothing will change for me except the name of the rep. It will not be Kiley. I also hope we don't inherit McClintock.

Ward From Cali's avatar

I hadn't even looked at the new districts yet. Turns out that I just missed being in District 3 by about a mile. Pity. Dr. Pan is a good un.

Look on the bright side. You may get to see a Killey vs. McClintock primary. Which means, no matter what happens, one of them will lose.

Rule 32: Enjoy the little things.

Unless Kiley moves, he can’t be elected here because the new boundaries no longer include his home base of Granite Bay. I’m not sure if McClintock lives within the new boundaries of 5, either. More shall be revealed.

Last time, I was happy to get rid of Obernolte. Before him we had Paul Cook, only saw him here when they let him be the Grand Marshal of the Mule Days Parade and some Veterans Day event in Big Pine. I had to turn my back and leave. I’m sure Kiley’s replacement will be about the same, nut probably less ambitious.

Residency in Congressional districts is pretty easily finessed, especially for incumbents of predecessor districts in the wake of a redistricting. In that particular case, I’m not sure either of them would need to actually establish a fig-leaf of residency in advance. Intent to establish residency if elected might be enough..In any case, a fig leaf of residency is sufficient. Buying or renting a residence and claiming you love there would be sufficient for 2926. The real question is if and where they want to run.

That said, that area will probably continue it's tradition of electing really obnoxious conservatives. It's why I’m not a big fan of Placer County.

Gawd, I love this man - Barack Obama on Pod Save America:

“And what this election also taught us is that it turns out that if, number one, you have candidates with integrity who believe in something and are in it for the right reasons, they can win. And what we also learned is that when young people are engaged and involved, then we win."

“Your task is going to be not to impose litmus tests,” he told the audience. “We had Abigail Spanberger win [Virginia’s gubernatorial contest], and we had Zohran Mamdani win [New York City’s mayoral race], and they are all part of a vision for the future. Our job is to say that we want everybody engaged, and we want to have a conversation about how to make sure that every person in this country is treated with dignity and respect.”

Democrats will have to demonstrate they recognize “we have differences, and yes, there are fights that are going to have to be fought, but that deep down, there is something core in us that we have in common that is extraordinary and that America at its best leans in to this notion of ‘E Pluribus Unum,’ that out of many can come one,” Obama said. “That’s the conversation that you need to have.”

Trump "truthed" a post in which he claimed that the ONLY REASONS for the "blue wave" were because he wasn't on the ballot AND because of the SHUTDOWN. FIRST, this was an OFF-OFF year midterm election, so Trump wasn't on the ballot, and presidential election years drive turnout, which this year WAS NOT. SECONDLY, if he's saying that the shutdown drove the BLUE vote, he's, for once in his God-forsaken life, ADMITTING FAULT. I don't even think he KNOWS what he did (because he's a fucking moron), but...

Donnie: No, mom, you're not listening. she said the PRESIDENT said it.

ME. Oh, okay. what else did she say, dear?

Donnie: and she said the President was Seventy Nine hundred thousand million trillion years old.

he's a big boy now, but he still calls me on Mother's Day and I ask him when he's coming to visit. he say's "mom, I live in Washington now."

I remember Washington. he was President the year I was born. a very good President. he put Tariffs on all the imports during the Blockade.....
