Don't use chrome if your firefox is slow. It will hog every last little shred of memory. I have the same issue. DISABLE your flash player and all the crap will stop popping up and running automatically. Mine runs several times faster without it.
You guys, I couldn't use the internet at ALL if I didn't have google chrome and ad block! I totally second Vegan and Tiara! Google chrome is awesome, super easy (I'm a moron and I have no problem at all). And if you like gmail, and google calendar, it's all connected. Seriously, whenever I'm on a public computer, like in a hotel business center, I'm like WTF???? and realize how completely awful the ads are. You have to send Wonkette money, though, to make up for it. AND, as far as the animations go, google chrome also lets you set your settings to "turn off all animations" which stops animated banner ads cold. (You have to turn it back on if you want to see someone's gif, etc.)

You know, my husband's been watching, so it's on, and honestly, women's soccer has been fantastic to watch. And no one expected Brazil, home of the top soccer teams, to lose in their home, against of all things cold, non-soccer playing Sweden! As an old I still get so much pleasure from watching full-out lovely athletic girls playing their hearts out. In my day (crotchety, trembling voice) there weren't no such things, girls had to be Miss America or whatever and cry delicately and modestly if they actually won. These girls is FIERCE!
i disabled flash a long time ago. the flash ads show a grey box that says activate flash player. the ads that look like the youtube player are the problem. on most sites firefox is pretty good, it is just a few sites that are a problem. this one wasn't until the last couple of weeks when that banner at the bottom started. even youtube stalls, and buffers on occasion. in the sticks where i live, internet options are dial up, satellite, or the local small telephone company offers high speed that is sent wirelessly, but is not really as fast as they claim, at least not for me. they say the repeater is too far away. i'm right at the outer limits of coverage.
