Ta, Stephen. Having had a dad who was a double amputee (above the knee) before the ADA, this is an issue about which I'm passionate.

so happy there is someone VISIBLE with disablites right now. Part of my issue with most humans, is they force us to hide. We are visible reminders of those fears of death (hence, in part, a part of the youth craze). So afraid of death, we humans are, that we will right into her arms due to our running in fear.

Anyhoo, these last 3 years have been not only a miserable hell, but quite insightful to the human species itself. Sadly humans, when stressed, will WILLINGLY put their pain onto others rather than help another human (even if one is paid to do so: See ALL my MD's esp those who rx my immunosuppresants & Covid protections for ALL of us). Long story short, her viability helps us all cuz so many of you all (even IF disabled cuz I still have it too) will make our lives harder due to abelism and not being able to comprehend in the slightest WHY we need these things.

Expand full comment

Ever since I found out what ableism is, I've noticed a disturbing tendency toward it in myself. I don't mean that I go around being rude or condescending to disabled people -- at least not consciously. I've even been known to help them slightly when the occasion called for it. But it's more like being uncomfortable around them.

And it's not just them. I've always been squeamish. I'm uncomfortable even around descriptions of illness, especially really awful stuff like cancer. I don't like even reading about it. It's one of many reasons why I disappointed my mother by not becoming a doctor.

And it's been getting worse lately. As I age and my own body starts to break down, It's getting to the point where I'm even muting TV ads for prescription drugs before those interminable warnings can come on. I guess it doesn't take Freud to understand the prevailing psychic dynamic here: Fear of my own mortality.

But my point is that I realize it's messed up and I'm trying to overcome it.

If I ever get fucked up enough to play what amounts to a mean prank on a disabled person just because I could, I hope someone shoots me in the head. (Inciting violence against yourself isn't against the RfR, is it?)

It might help for you to watch Ask A Mortician on youtube. The goal of that channel is to make death less scary. It's very informative and sometimes fun. You should check it out. https://www.youtube.com/@AskAMortician

hugs. Some people don't handle disabilities/the disabled very well, and I'm glad you're working on it.

The infantalization thing may be the most aggravating part for Mr Demi. He can do anything but see & navigate a vehicle. INCLUDING PARENTING HIS CHILDREN, NEIGHBOR WHO KEEPS CALLING THE COPS

Expand full comment

What the ACTUAL FUCK??!! That neighbor needs to mind their own goddamn business and check their ableist shit.

Expand full comment

Its gotten better now that youngest is 7, but still.

What's worse for his mental health (he has anxiety and depression, especially about parenting) was the _former_ shrink of his who thought it was a bad idea. He came in happy to tell her about how he'd been parent on duty and the three of them did some relatively big thing for the first time, & without mishap; the shrink flipped out about how "unsafe" him being the sole parent available for a few hours was. Kept obsessing over the stove like Mr Demi couldn't hear the thing get turned on or smell gas. She shattered this tiny bit of self-confidence he'd achieved. Set him back a year or more, even though he *knew* she had no idea what the fuck she was talking about. (We know 2 couples who're all blind since childhood & who also raised 4 or 5 kids between them.)

Anyone remember how, in the wake of the expulsion and then quick restoration of the two Justins, someone leaked a tape of a closed-door meeting by the Republican caucus? And how some high-ranking Republican asshole (can't remember if it was Sexton in particular) had an absolute shitfit meltdown at another Republican asshole, blistering him for not voting to expel Johnson too? He was furious because that made the whole caucus look, well, Caucasian, IYKWIMAITYD.

Um...yeah, fella. It did. Because...you were.

I remember that. And so does Pepperidge Farms.

From what I’ve seen of the Tennessee GQP, they don’t need anyone’s help in making them look racist… because they ARE racist.

You don’t have to be a soulless ghoul to be a a Republican … but it helps.

But all the soulless ghouls like them...

I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Johnson a few weeks ago. She is a formidable presence. I hope she crushes Marsha. Don’t say it’s not possible, Marsha only won by 10 points and Cameron gave Johnson a ton of name recognition.

also, if I had that scooter I'd attach those little spiky things in my hubs to deploy on special occasions, maybe an additional flame thrower, and a taser for when someone wants to talk shit.

Bagels, you OP, so thought of this too

I was thinking the 80's anime/cartoon "Jason & the wheeled warriors' Long ago when a wee lass. Anyhoo, I always think of this when talking of some peeps sporting around in a mobility aid.

Sexton is Gen X, born in 1970. boomers made sure to have the next generation of awful at the ready.

Expand full comment

see those x'ers: well there were these kids in school with whom Alex P. Keaton was a god NOT the villain he was written as.

Some of us we actually tried to HELP in this world, then others of us, they went towards the darkness their parents set up for them.

Gen X is weird. It was when divisions or privlidge started to show in earnest even in same social class level. Some of us went: 'whatever' and the other side went "greed is good" Depends on which voices you chose. Some chose poorly; really wish some choices had Last Crusade consequences KWIM?

Expand full comment

It's not just an Xer problem. Millennials have this divide as well. It's so strange to look at both of my little brothers and see unapologetic conservatives staring back at me.

Expand full comment

I grew up barely middle class as Gen X and to be honest, I have no idea if half of Gen X in 2023 were on a different planet during the 80s.

Expand full comment

me, definitely NOT middle class. Also a chica (mexican descended persuasion). I saw a lot of it(the division that is) I mean you don't grow up on ronnie cheese and NOT get to work your way though HS,. So yeah, I didn't see how bad it was either lol. Like you, recently, I didn't realize it was quite so extensive a divide and how did our education system utterly fail so many (esp those in upper tax brackets)?!
