OK, NFTs are a fucking scam. But bitcoin is a useful currency in that it enables the global ransomware business to function. So it is not a fraud or a hoax, but rather a parasite. It is also good for speculation.

Speaking of scams on top of a scam, internet scammers from Kolkata sometimes asked their "customers," i.e. victims, to send payment through crypto because once the mark fell for it, the payment was untraceable.

The scammers converted the crypto to real money PDQ.

Of course, the crypto from any "process," i.e. criminal fraud, that was still unconverted is now lost to the scammers and their victims.

Actually while the crypto-scammers claim that it's not true. There are literally thousands of people in prison now because they believed it, so the Treasury Dept. doesn't do much to dissuade criminals of that belief since it's a useful tool.

Stanford Law appears to have handed their beer to Harvard

During the proceedings, Bankman-Fried's mother Barbara Fried laughed when her son was called a "fugitive," according to CoinDesk's report, which described his parents as showing both "dejection and defiance." She also "clenched her jaw and chewed on the frames of her glasses," per the Times.

His father, Joseph Bankman, "occasionally put his fingers in his ears as if to drown out the sound of the proceedings," per CoinDesk.

After the hearing, which ended with Bankman-Fried being denied bail, both parents gave him a hug, per the Times.

Both Fried and Bankman are on the faculty at Stanford Law School, and remain in the Bahamas with their son.

TL:DR - Illusory currency. Not backed by assets or any state, therefore valueless unless rubes choose to play fantasy finance by buying in with real dollars. Only good for scams, money laundering and buying drugs online.
