Someday, I’ve promised myself, I am going to visit these beautiful critters. In Rwanda. They are doing amazing conservation there: (Longread but worth it if you love gorillas, and I know you all do. Also, we can all use some goodtimes reading!)

"The AI slop is drowning out the people who actually research their history videos, because it’s coming for everything we enjoy."

My rule is that if it doesn't have a host on YouTube who I can verify is a real person, really verifying the contents, I refuse to watch it. I will hit the back button.

If I wanted poorly researched dreck regurgitating stuff everyone already knows, I'd watch History Channel reruns.

So here are some fun YouTube options that are actually generated by REAL PEOPLE:

- The aforementioned @HistoryTime in the 404 media article

- @TastingHistory for food and a history lesson

- @Townsends - also for food and a history lesson

- @historicroyalpalaces - exactly what it says, history videos about the UK royals and their homes, but these videos are made by the actual caretakers of those old buildings! Full website is https://www.hrp.org.uk/. Many AI slop shorts are stolen from these original videos.

- @TechnologyConnections for 20th century tech history and teardowns

- @BernadetteBanner for fashion history

- @PracticalEngineeringChannel for the history of cool buildings, bridges, and other feats of engineering

- @Brew for historic true crime and unsolved mysteries

- @ChubbyEmu for medical mysteries and history

- @BDylanHollis (Baking Yesteryear) for more food history

Absolutely the Democrats are polling in the toilet because the base is sick and tired of being ignored. That doesn't mean we will vote GOP though, the lesser of two evils is still, you know, LESS EVIL.

What I've noticed over the years is that generic Democrats tend to poll well enough, but specific individuals, less so. Conversely, specific Republicans always seem to do better than generic ones, even when those specifics are the most loathsome people in the nation.

NYT: "The Trump administration’s military deployment in Los Angeles has cost nearly $120 million so far, Gov. Gavin Newsom of California reported on Thursday as he demanded that the White House release the remaining troops. Mr. Newsom said the figure came from data obtained by the governor’s office and the California National Guard after he made a public-records request to the Defense Department. It reflects the cost since June 7, when President Trump ordered the first of more than 4,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 Marines into the nation’s second-largest city in response to immigration protests. The expenses, Mr. Newsom said, included $71 million for food and shelter, $37 million in payroll, more than $4 million in logistics supplies, $3.5 million in travel and $1.5 million for demobilization."

My daily Tiedrich is powerful this morning. I did not realize how many survivors - 100ish - of the Epstein abuse were out on the steps of the capital yesterday. Moving, empowering words from Jess Michaels:

When I was at a protest rally on Monday I had this great idea for a sign: break down 8647 into its prime factors. You know, something like (37^3)(19^2)(7^2) = 8647.

Alas... 8647 is a prime number.

“Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s old firm (now run by his twentysomething sons, so it’s fiiiine) has been buying up “tariff refund” options from all the big importers”

Yeah that tracks. I’ve said before that Lutnick is behind all the tariff bullshit because I knew he was making bank somehow. Why do you think he (oh sorry, of course it was Trump, lol) sent out that tweet after the judge ruling saying “no, tariffs are still on!”? Had to keep the contract prices low.

Lutnick has always been a fucking crook. Oh and sorry sons of Lutnick, you’re going to look just like him. All the money in the world ain’t fixing that shit.

I've written to Chuck. He calls me by my first name, I see no reason not to return the favor, even though all my missives contain my full Ms. First and Last name. I asked why he has not given an endorsement for NYC mayor, but I do not actually expect an answer.

He does answer sometimes (or whoever writes his letters/email), but mostly on subjects that are easy to answer.

YouTube is flat-out lying when they say that they're gonna crack down imass-produced A.I. slop. That shit has been steadily crowding out real content for over a year, and if you click on even ONE of them, the algorithm pounces and floods your feed with more.

And ya know what? They couldn't stop it even if they wanted to, not without changing their entire, engagement-driven business model. They know this. Of course they know this. Anything they say about A.I. content is a deliberate goddamn lie.

There's a way, but will they do anything about it? From what I have heard, they are at least as likely to banhammer the victim as the A.I. thief. That kinda puts it on perspective, doesn't it?

Why has this become such a sticking point? It's weird, and the insistence by some that it happens boggles my mind.
