The base has been closed but will start reopening Monday.The nearby mining town of Trona was cut off for 3 days and suffered much more damage. Lots of old rickety structures. The chemical plant is old and was badly damaged. No one seems to know if or when it will reopen. When looking at the money Alaska's GOP is cutting out of its budget, remember that America's largest state, Alaska, has a population of only 736,000, so the per person proposed cuts in services to Alaska's citizens is drastic. I recently came back from Anchorage after celebrating a young relative's graduation from the University of Alaska, and it is sad to know others will lose that opportunity.
