As kid I watched Warner Brothers cartoons where "made in Japan" was a punchline. As a teenager I watched my older brother driving his new 1967 Datsun around. The cars my dad and all his friends drove had mechanical clocks in the dashboard that didn't work. In the Datsun, I noticed that it did, and thought "uh-oh".
Then for years we tried to fight the Japanese invasion (it was called that) via laws. Finally (finally!) we started fighting back by improving our cars. Took a while.
Oh yeah, we would still have shit cars. A neighbor had a '67 Toyota. He called it a little tank.I myself had to have a '59 MGA. I loved it. Bugs-on-the-teeth roadster.I learned a lot with that car. Mostly about the English sense of humour.

Isn't New Orleans all private schools now? A niece was hired by teach america, where they are paid minimum wage and not given supplies, she paid for hers herself., she did it for as long as she could because she liked the kids and did not want to abandon them to so many of the bad under educated teachers in the school. t was horrible, but it was a non-profit school because the administration /owners took huge wages and got bonuses at the end of the fiscal year so there was no profit. the schools there stink pretty much, may be some good ones, but not many.
