The most likely explanation is not that they fear it because they don't understand it, they fear it because they don't understand EVERYTHING.

There are several problems with that statement. First of all, they’re probably not afraid but more like perpetually outraged. Second, asking them to understand is like yelling at clouds, it might be therapeutic for you but doesn’t make it rain.
