We used to take a certain pride in our courage -- "the home of the brave" -- and our willingness to live with risk in exchange for freedom and opportunity. Guns, for example. By any rational measure, the prevalence of guns increase the risk of being shot. That is, guns diminish our security. But gun-ownership is one of our cherished freedoms. So we make the trade.

Trial by jury means people like O.J. and Cassie Anthony do not go to jail. But we don't want the government to be too powerful. (I don't understand the right-wing's affection for the death penalty, which gives the government the legal power to kill its own citizens.) We make the trade.
