I am afraid I will be eating no cranberries- I have never enjoyed them, despite the rave reviews for my mother's cranberry-orange sauce- BUT, this year I actually am making a faux (wood) cranberry garland as part of my Chrismukkah decorations and I just received a giant bag of beautiful red wood beads for the purpose. Being me, I carefully ordered my beads after checking the average size of a cranberry, and elected to go with a measurement on the smaller side of the American cranberry, thank you very much. Lol.

I have some plain beads coming too, which I intend to paint gold and intersperse amongst the "berries". Happy cranberry time!

Really? You never picked up a cranberry while stringing cranberries and popcorn, or making Rebecca's sauce or whatever, and just - bit into it? They're crunchy, like an apple; but they've got that zip tang. I've certainly tasted worse things (liver comes to mind).

Our holiday feast won't happen until Friday as the stoner child is working the holiday proper - ah the joys of the service industry. There will likely only be three of us; I don't think her dad is going to make the journey across town. It could happen, but I don't expect it to. Other child and their partner are on the left coast. There just isn't a whole lot of anybody else, but that's ok. We're still not quite set up to host, tho I do hope we will be soon.

What, no mention of Ken Layne's cranberry business, with the gin?

Well, I see it came up last year. I'm back from the near-dead good old days with the original: https://www.wonkette.com/p/wonkettes-actual-awesome-real-cranberry-business

The CBS thing is interesting given that somehow 'The Wizard of Oz' became a Thanksgiving movie.

I think it was initially inserted something to entertain the kids out of school, so throw this on, but it became a tradition in the weirdo way we incorporate stuff as "nostalgia".

I suppose TWOO themes of being thankful to be home because the greener grass is dangerous (but exciting!) meets the Thanksgiving ethos....

Also...the video of people cheering the destruction of something their kids love had a Roman Coliseum aspect to it and I believe it presages the mood of the TFG voters who root for it all to burn down as "entertainment".

Namaste and hope your Thanksgiving prep is going well.

Ermahgerd -- that theme music started up on "The Thanksgiving That Almost Wasn't" and I remembered hearing it every year back when it was still just broadcast TV.

I once ate a raw cranberry. I wouldn't recommend it.

I disdain to buy canned cranberry sauce, making the basic sauce from scratch is easy if you like whole berries, and I do.

Candied cranberries.

Make a simple syrup of equal parts sugar and water. Stir in raw cranberries. Soak for several hours in the fridge. Take the berries out with a slotted spoon, roll them in sugar. Let them dry completely.

They are gorgeous, and they pop when you bite them. Still quite tart even with all the sugar.

The Cranberries ruled, truly. Some of their songs just rocked, "How" and "Salvation" come to mind immediately. And "Linger" just rips your guys out in the best way. Great Irish band they were.

Unpopular opinion incoming -

I can't stand Linger. The rhyme scheme is - not great, Bob, and to repeat it over and over and OVER.. nope. No thanks. That's a hard channel switch if it comes on the radio near me.

I had friends with small children about the time Barney first went viral, and they were doing very well at keeping their kids ignorant of the existence of the purple menace - but they forgot to tell the grandparents, who put the show on in all innocence.

All of the cats seem truly happy to have me home, but this was especially challenging, I think, for Alice because she’s never had me leave her before, and she still has a lot of baggage and trauma and issues. So she is very happy that I’m back, and she is sticking close to me. She is such a darling. https://substack.com/profile/1687878-1d57a1d5931d/note/c-78564826?utm_source=notes-share-action&r=106di

I’ve been swapping cats so that they each get some snuggle time. Máebh is very possessive of me, when it comes to sharing me with Alice, so I have to play musical cats. We continue to work on this, and I remain hopeful.

Pick up a package of frozen cranberries, just plain berries and nothing but berries. Take a couple of cups, put them in about a cup of water, stir them, boiling, add some sweetener, cook them for a few minutes until they start to pop. Stir in some citrus fruit, Orange or pineapple, throw in a little cinnamon. Take it off the stove. All of this happens very quickly. Transferred into a bowl that can handle the heat, stir it a couple times let it cool.

This recipe will change your life for the better. Little flavor explosions will go off in parts of your brain that you didn’t even know you had. You will look down and wonder when you changed your clothes into the superhero costume, no cape, because you will now have Superpowers.

Cranberries are a gift from the gods. Plus, they are perhaps the prettiest fruit harvest ever.

I used to dream of living in the middle of a cranberry bog on an island, and the bog was like a moat around me. The only way in would be a long drive, and I would live in a tower, and I would have gardens and chickens and cats. There would be a gate at the end of the road, and only the cranberry harvesting truck would know the combination to the gate. And I would have cranberry relish whenever I wanted it.
