"Downtown" was the second 45 I bought, after "Up, Up & Away." It was on sale at a Kmart Blue Light special for half price and my mother let me buy it with my monthly allowance. Cost 13 cents, including tax. I wore it out.
One of Petula's songs that I often listen to on my Classic Rock medley playlist is "I Know A Place." It's so cheerful that it makes me smile. I wish I knew such a place.
"Wonderfully batshit" is the best description of Song of the Roasted Swan ever!!!!
I remember reading a translation of the lyrics when my orchestra played Carmina Burana ages ago. That poor swan! This soloist in the video so perfectly expresses the Swan's emotions about his fate.
I get what you are saying, with all the death, misery, and destruction this regime has perpetrated over these oh too many long years, they are being scolded and called out for the sex crimes, which are heinous, they get let off on all the rest of the terrible shit they, did and still do!
Ta, Robyn. Petula Clark's birthday!! We're doing another women's voices show tonight on A Jet Age Sound. You can hear us from 10 p.m. to midnight eastern by going to wioxradio.org and clicking the Listen Live button. If you encounter sound problems, reload the page. Good day, beloved Wonketteers. I love and appreciate you all and I bless us all with love, health, peace, and grace.
Please, please stay safe. Wear a mask or two, wash your hands, sanitize when you cannot wash and let the sanitizer dry completely, stop touching your face, take Vitamin D, get a booster shot six months after your last, and catch up on any other vaccinations you need, avoid indoor and crowded outdoor gatherings and when you must meet, remove masks only to eat, drink, and take quick photos, and stay the fuck away from me and everyone with whom you do not share a roof. Do this because you love yourself, and because I love you, too. Do this in memory of dear departed family and friends like Forever 27 Treg and heroic Tony, Holly's pilot friend, among nearly eight million dead worldwide. Do this to honor the nurses and other frontline medical personnel (we love and appreciate you, Medicos of Wonkette), particularly ICU Hera Mrs Land Shark RN. Be kind, especially to yourself, and please stay safe.
Steve Irwin was a horrible man. Our eldest daughter is a zoologist in Australia. She and some colleagues went to the Irwin zoo and hated it. It is all pristine and clean with no enriching enclosures for any of the animals.
Irwin himself was not the animal lover people believe. He intentionally inflicted pain and distress to the animals so that he could make a TV show.
Right there with you. Except for the bacon, because I never made it to the store yesterday and now the breakfast I’ve been fantasizing about all week remains a fantasy. So I guess only halfway there.
On the horns of a dilemma: I've been sick with a horrible cold for the past week, yet if I don't get out of this house soon I'm gonna lose my fuckin' mind. We haven't been "out" out for much longer than that because Chris was sick first. Our usual Saturday night is to go to our favorite micropub taproom, sit outside in their heated tent (I get claustrophobic inside the taproom, it's pretty small and too warm), have a few beers, and get some food from whatever food truck is there. Tonight is our favorite, a pizza truck (with real Eye-talians running it and their pizzas are *chef's kiss*) and it's been two weeks since we've been anywhere.
I've blown out most of the gunk in my head and, while I still have a bit of a cough, it isn't nearly as gross as it was a couple days ago.
Do we go out now that I'm feeling..."okay"? It might make me feel better, or it could put me in the hospital within a couple days. 🤷🏻♀️ We won't be interacting with anyone other than those at the bar getting our beers and, like I say, it's "sort of" outside but with heaters. The outside temperature will be 51-52°F. but much warmer in the tent.
I'm starting to think it's worth the risk because I'm so SICK of watching awful TV every night and it's been so long, I'm beginning to think I've forgotten how to behave in public. As an added bonus, Chris suggested my cough might make people we don't like steer clear of us. 👍🏻
"People with flu are most contagious during the first three days of their illness. Some people, including young children and people with weakened immune systems may be contagious for longer periods of time. "
Assuming you're in reasonable health I wouldn't worry too much about infecting others. You could wear a mask just to be sure.
I'm not necessarily afraid of infecting anyone else—if they're at the pub, that's on them, and if I'm sick I'm staying home. No, I'm more afraid of these cough-all-over-the-place, sneeze-on-everyone, don't-wash-their-hands-after-peeing morons making me more sick right when I'm starting to recover from the last round of ick. I'll wear a mask in the Uber but that's about it; we sit outside at the pub and all the tables out there are about 10 feet away from each other, so I don't have to worry about the coughers/sneezers/ and bring hand sanitizer for when I have to touch a door handle to get out of the unisex toilets.
Personally I judge harm to the other as about a hundred times as bad as harm to self, so that's where my first focus is, but we must all make our own choices in these matters :)
I would err on the side of caution. The whole family was officially diagnosed with flu A 3 weeks ago and we are still struggling with fatigue and coughs.
Would your Dr prescribe Tessalon Perles? they are the only meds that have worked for my cough. My chest still rattles with every breath but the cough is less
Never heard of that (no guarantee my doctor has, either). My rattle is gone, and if I felt fatigued I wouldn't even consider it. I can run up the stairs without getting breathless (a good sign).
I just need to get out of this house! I need pizza! I need beer, lol!
It's in Gravesend—on the Thames, just east of London, called "Iron Pier." Fabulous place.
I obviously survived and feel fine today (certainly no worse than yesterday). Their new tent is a lot warmer than the old one because the ceiling isn't as high and I actually thought about taking off my coat for awhile.
Wow, the only time we've gone a whole month without going out was during lockdown! Hope you all recover soon and manage to get out and see the world again!
Oh, I always cover my mouth when I cough (usually into the inside of my elbow, and it isn't very frequent today) and I'll wear a mask in the Uber there and back. If I'm poundin' down beers, though, a mask will just get in the way, lol!
Chris says the fresh air will do me good, which is usually true. He also says "Beer cures everything," which is also usually true.
We actually have some pretty good pizza here and, like I said, the food truck tonight has guys running it who are Italian. Hand-made dough, you can watch them make each pizza (nothing frozen). They have a wood-fired oven in their van, too (you can smell it two blocks away).
That settles it. I want some fuckin' pizza and beer. I've survived pneumonia before, I can do it again, ha ha!
Pronounced "Boon-tuh". Originally. I think.
My primary memory of Petula Clark is as the co-star of the last musical Fred Astaire starred in:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziNmd7g7__A
Sporty Spice was easily the most talented of the Spice Girls. A hill I am quite happy to die upon is that Northern Girl is a great album.
Posh Spice is a pill.
She was the only one who could really sing.
I'm disappointed that, as a Chicagoan, you forgot to mention the Bundt cake scene from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Robyn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rqbo2612lww

You liberals have no proof that trump even knew epstein. Maxwell said so. Whuttabout clinton blowjob?

Both are over 18. "When did Orange Turd stop giving Bill Clinton blow jobs?" is not a question that any of us should care about.

“Get your mind out of the gutter.”
I’M NOT IN HERE WITH YOU, YOU’RE IN HERE WITH ME!

Have you seen how South Park mocked him? Always sticking his finger up animal bums.
:(
"We said BUNDT. Get your mind out of the gutter."
Now I'm wondering what I would have heard if my mind was in Robyn's gutter.
Hur hur horn...
Thick bacon and coffee; it's what's for breakfast.
Hell yeah!
Right there with you. Except for the bacon, because I never made it to the store yesterday and now the breakfast I’ve been fantasizing about all week remains a fantasy. So I guess only halfway there.

Totally understand. Tonight is our first night out in a month
Also, where in the UK is this fabulous establishment you described? I will have to check it out next time we head over the pond

So glad you had a good night. We also went out for my hubby's retirement party
Yay! Life returning to normal! Congrats on your husband's retirement!
I've had a sinus infection for over a month. Last week to the doc and ge said " you're just about over it." Hasn't keep me home much.
Go out for a little while. Cover your mouth when you cough. Or wear mask.
I'm amazed England has pizza...
Oh, I always cover my mouth when I cough (usually into the inside of my elbow, and it isn't very frequent today) and I'll wear a mask in the Uber there and back. If I'm poundin' down beers, though, a mask will just get in the way, lol!
