My uncle dryland farms winter wheat. He's a legit family farmer, although I'll be honest and say that the only reason he's been able to stay comfortable is by owning more or less 75% of the county and by owning nearly 100% of the tillable land in that county. Yes, county.
He's okay for now--but only because he sells a crop five years in advance. Want to guess how much the Mandarin-induced tanking of the price of wheat will cost him personally in five years' time? No? Think "around $500,000 net" and you'd be guessing low. He'll survive, but other legit family farmers will be forced to sell out to corporations or to go bankrupt, or both.
It's a cold comfort, but those farmers in the Midwest and South who farm crops that are more subject to market swings, the ones who cheered the Mandarin? They're going to be burning their MAGA hats this winter to stay warm.
