"Please understand, exalted one, that our planes must refuel in Canada and our allies keep switching the jet fuel tankers with tanker trucks filled with syrup. We are told it is a common mistake that has developed all over Canada recently."

"What? Our planes don't use syrup for fuel? I signed an order to switch that a few months ago. I did it because Canada asked me to. I knew they were trying to trick me into something but I fooled them by signing the EO anyway."

"And now those sly bastards are doing exactly what you ordered them to do!"

"Those bastards! I'll show them!"

I’m two-thirds of the way through the third Dune novel, having been informed that only the first three are worth reading. My takeaways at this point? Herbert seemed to view authoritarianism as the only workable and long-lasting model for government. Given how he describes the effects of undiluted spice on one’s psyche and philosophical worldview, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he used LSD. And with respect to David Lynch, it’s strange that the director didn’t grasp that Paul wasn’t intended as a hero.

Tasner Hasenpfeffer's avatar

You may want to read the next book to complete the story. I thought God Emperor of Dune was better than the previous two.

R. Riddle's avatar

It's too bad that Jodorowsky never got to bring his version to fruition. That would have been a cinematic LSD trip.

Diane's Less Hostile Username's avatar

I highly recommend the second three books! They are less books of ideas and more narrative storytelling, but I always enjoy them.

Lance Thrustwell's avatar

Lynch's Dune was, in my opinion, really just an homage to Flash Gordon and other early 'space' movies and pulp fiction. I bet he just skimmed the book.

Diane's Less Hostile Username's avatar

TOTALLY wrong director for Dune. I am a huge Lynch fan, but no.

The Wanderer's avatar

One passage in the first three novels (I forget which, and the exact wording) remarked that a Hero was an affliction more than a blessing.

Israeli Spies Evacuate Netanyahu’s Son From Miami Over ‘Significant Threat’

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s eldest son Yair has been secretly flown out of the US following a “significant threat” to his life, according to the country’s security agency, Shin Bet.

The revelation comes days after Netanyahu himself claimed in a telephone interview with Israel’s Channel 14 that Iran had “tried to murder” one of his sons, without specifying which one or providing any details about the alleged plot.

“There was a significant threat to harm Yair Netanyahu, and in light of this and after an assessment, a decision was made to urgently extract him along with his security team and return him to Israel,” Shin Bet said in a statement on Saturday, without disclosing the nature of the threat or when exactly the operation took place."

You might have heard that the G20 is in Asheville, NC and Trump and his Treasury Secretary will be trying to use the event to promote Dear Leader's "leadership". Protests are planned by the locals, particularly about the administration's lack of response in disbursing funds for Hurricane Helene relief and rebuilding.

US Treasury blocks certain journalists from G20 meeting in Asheville

"Individual reporters from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg News were not granted credentials to the Group of 20 finance ministers' meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, the Times reported.

The Treasury has not explained the decision. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told The Associated Press in an interview Sunday that “it has nothing to do with point of view.”

The reporters who've been denied access include the Times' Alan Rappeport, who has been covering such meetings and the Treasury Department since 2017. However, another reporter for the Times, Berlin bureau chief Jim Tankersley, is allowed to attend.

The Times said in a statement that denying American journalists access to an event in the U.S. is “not just another disturbing effort by the administration to undermine independent journalism, but a blatant attempt to evade public scrutiny.”"

Bestiality isn’t a sexually “deviant” act, no matter what CBS News claims, because deviance is not a moral principle. Having sex with an animal is an act of abuse against a creature that isn’t in a position to say no. Being grossed out by it isn’t the same as having a moral objection, and that’s what conservatives refuse to understand. Just as morality is about harm/care and fairness/cheating, sexual morality by extension is about consent. No, conservatives, that doesn’t mean that anything one does is okay as long as one says okay, it means everyone has the right to set boundaries for their bodies.

The Wanderer's avatar

Agreed.

Shall I have Mister Hands enter the chat? Posthumously, of course.
