Yeah, I managed to spend my last 8 years at Ramstein (3 years at USAFE, 1 at the AOS and 4 more at the NATO Air HQ ) and retired in 2000. I worked the same basic job as a DoD civil service until last year, and retired again - really retired. I live in the area with my German wife of 20 years. We jumped all the hoops to get me a residence permit, driver's license, German spec car, etc. last year. Now I'm a happy bum.
My brother was an AF pilot of Vietnam vintage, and used his GI Bill to get all his ratings through ATP, type rated in three or four jets, and used the remainder to get a bunch of weird shit like float plane and glider and instructor ratings. What a great deal.
