I thought that was old movie footage of a Tasmanian tiger.

Kay Ducky's head hurts's avatar

I did too! But I think they were gone by the time cameras would be worth using to film them?

Blue Willow Woman's avatar

No, there is film of the last Tasmania tiger. It's pacing in a cage. Very sad.

It doesn't mean they're happy

They're snidely making fun of you

They are actually very cute animals.

Very VERY weird sexually, though.....

The spotted hyena, yes. The ones above are striped hyenas and they are garden variety, sexually at least.

Apparently, as per my research, it is possible to train them and keep them as pets, but they are super-smelly.

DId we ever figure out if they are more cats or dogs?

Blue Willow Woman's avatar

They are in the suborder Feliformia. Convergent evolution is fascinating!

Martini Glambassador's avatar

They are more closely phylogenetically related to cats than dogs, as per the Internet, but they are their own species, the Hyaenidae family.

CC's avatar

That's fascinating, because to me they look like dogs that were designed slightly off..

"peduncle"

What an unfortunate name for something from botanic anatomy

Gawd, I wish I could present this Dana Milbank column to every MAGA denying that Trump and his Republican allies are breaking the law many times a day - but I'm sure that ( even if I could ) they would either reject as "fake news" or pretend none of the stuff Milbank outlines actually happened. We know better.

Welp since Eichorn now has federal charges I would not be one bit surprised if trump pardons him. There will be loud screams from the GQP how wrong it is.

Just kidding. They won’t give a shit.

Perhaps they were planting black oaks?

In February, communities around the country learned that funding was canceled for a nationwide tree-planting program aimed at making neighborhoods cooler, healthier and more resilient to climate change.

The urban forestry initiative, administered by the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation, was supposed to distribute $75 million in grant funding to about 100 different cities, nonprofit organizations and tribes to plant shade trees in neighborhoods that need them the most. The program was funded by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, which included big investments in climate initiatives.

In a letter terminating the contract, the U.S. Forest Service stated the program "no longer aligns with agency priorities regarding diversity, equity and inclusion."

What a shame.

People LOVE trees.

We bought our house because there's a protected, huge (80-100') Valley Oak in the front.

It's a new house on an old lot, and every Monday the builders would encounter a new sign saying "Save This Tree!"

(The floorplan of the house was changed to accommodate the tree.)

Possibly made the comment here already but will repeat it - YOU DON'T PRESCRIBE A STEROID TO SOMEONE WITH AN INFECTION BECAUSE IT PROMOTES THE INFECTION JFC I mean this isn't even deep fucking pharmacology AND A FUCKING STEROID AIN'T GONNA DO JACK OR SHIT FOR MEASLES

Fuck, at this rate it'll be cupping to balance the humors by the end of the year

Gabe Fleisher always stays on an even keel and keeps his head on straight. I'll pass along some of what he posted this morning:

“Two months shy of ten years into Trump’s political career, it still feels like the broader political ecosystem hasn’t adjusted to being so privy to a candidate/president’s innermost thoughts: plenty of commentators can always be counted on to jump immediately on whatever Trump says (in either a positive or negative fashion), even before it’s clear whether the words will be backed by substantive action. (To be clear: the president being the president, sometimes his words are important to cover even if they are detached from action. But sometimes isn’t every time.)

“Oftentimes, I feel like people on both the left and right would just have a much better experience of the Trump years — and not find themselves as needlessly frustrated or excited, respectively — if they simply took a beat and waited to see what kind of Trump comment we are dealing with.”

I think he floats his moronic ideas to see which ones resonate with the MAGA chuds. The rest of us raising a stink might be the only thing that prevents them from becoming actions.

This is a very small and also little thing, but these days (These Days) I am clinging to the small things like they were flotsam on a stormy sea.

At exactly 8:00 AM in the morning on March 21, the sun comes up and shines smack dab on the east side of my house. So there I was in my nightpajamas, waiting for the sunrise and explaining to the Cats why breakfast was late, and thinking I was may be wrong about this, and it would be a different time. But it was not.

And I was also thinking about how damn difficult it would be to build a house and have it so well aligned with the sun that on winter solstice, the sun would be shining in on the south side of the house.

And now I must scrambledamble! The breakfast! It is late! I am late! Cats do not understand!

The media lies. Quite frequently. They always leave out the relevant details because they want everyone to believe whatever they want people to believe. So these headlines, no, I don’t believe them.

To drink- (I mean) to think about it, I coulda been a Mrs Robinson type... More'n likely homeless afore dyin' on the street. About seven years after I got hep when I was 20, I decided to quit drinkin' n'smokin' t'save what was left a'my liver. One thing I learned early when I quit drinkin' was who was real. Now I can't get that song outta my head. My wife'll have a shit fit if I try t'bang it out on the guitar cuz it's like almost One A-fuckin'M.

While admittedly new to this Substack community, I have now traveled 60 times around the sun, been through a few elections, and nothing can or ever will compare to this crazy year. For my birthday, all I want is a functioning democracy. Please donate what you can to Josh Weil, Gay Valimont, and Susan Crawford. Thanks!
