Black people typically can't get help from the police; this riverboat had theft trouble with the pontoon fools before but the police encouraged them to drop charges. White people typically have the privilege of attacking Black people in public without recourse, and White assholes like these act on that privilege. That's the context for all the other Black people coming in to save the man who was attacked. There was no other recourse, just the option of leaving him lying on the dock being kicked. The decision to rescue him, like the decision to have a big fierce dog in your house because the police won't come, has to be seen against that background.
I would love to see those white assholes try something like this in, say, New Jersey. There, the passenger boat would probably just ram and sink the pontoon thingy.
Imagine feeling so entitled that you dock your shitty little pontoon boat at the riverboat slip, stranding a huge boat filled with passengers waiting to disembark, and delaying all the passengers waiting on shore to board the boat. Assholes. And then physically attacking the captain of the riverboat, who had to take a dinghy to the dock to move your shitty little pontoon boat.
Apparently, there were signs clearly indicating they weren’t to dock there. Entitled assholes will always think the rules don’t apply to them. No mystery as to whom they voted for.

Jim Crow etiquette absolutely still exists. A key component to good etiquette is not voting. That is generational. That is why an elected Black mayor in the same state has not been acknowledged or allowed to do his job. In Alabama the Tommy Tuberville's speaking out in favor of white nationalists is not an aberration. Nobody in Alabama is surprised or alarmed by that. They can be tolerant of Black people but only if they stay in their lane. And play football for their college plantation.
