Actually, they've been here the whole time. We have hundreds in my neighborhood- they come out at sunset and will swoop down to my swimming pool, which is really a lot of fun to watch while you're in it.
Gardner Canyon is half way to Tucson, it's about 30+ miles from the border. It's also an extremely popular hiking/camping/ATV area and nowhere near the smuggling routes. We have bats all over Southern AZ- they're quite commonplace here (which is a good thing considering that they are voracious insectivores). If these nitwits are so damned worried about protecting the beautiful areas in the Santa Rita Mountains they should point their AR-15's at the real villains who would destroy the area- the board of directors of the proposed Rosemont Copper Mine.
The biologists were using recordings of bat sounds to draw the objects of their study into the area. Unfortunately, this also attracted the militiamen to the area as the echolocation of bats sounds uncannily like the screeching of Representative Michelle Bachmann.
It's not their fault. At the monthly dipshit meeting they should have raised the fact that they were unaware of what "batshit patrol" was supposed to mean, though.
While they're waiting for the Mexicans from Guatemala to invade, maybe these turdblossoms could do a little landscape maintenance? That part of Arizona really looks like shit.

The bats mat very well be Mexican Free-Tailed Bats <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wik..." target="_blank">" rel="nofollow noopener" title="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_free-tailed_...">http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... . Such bats have infiltrated the USA so extensively that they have become official state bats in Texas and Oklahoma.
