Don McGahn is an absolute angel, innocent as a newborn babe, who would never, ever assist the president in obstructing justice or interfere with that NICE MAN Mr. Mueller's investigation! Truly, it is a wonder to behold this paragon of ethics who manages to maintain his integrity while diligently serving a corrupt maniac. Lucky thing Mike Schmidt and Maggie Haberman have so many anonymous sources to report that, whatever happens, White House Counsel Don McGahn will come out of this a hero of the Republic!

In January 2018, the New York Times reported that Trump had ordered McGahn to fire Robert Mueller. But McGahn refused to comply with the order, because he is a pillar of virtue. Yesterday, the same Times correspondents reported that the president asked McGahn to deny the story of his attempts to axe the Special Counsel, but once again, McGahn refused to violate his legal ethics.
In one episode, the president told an aide that the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, should issue a statement denying a New York Times article in January. The article said Mr. McGahn told investigators that the president once asked him to fire the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III. Mr. McGahn never released a statement and later had to remind the president that he had indeed asked Mr. McGahn to see that Mr. Mueller was dismissed, the people said.
Wow, so many McGahn scoops for Schmidt and Haberman!
Yesterday's article also reports that the president asked Reince Preibus some general questions about his interview with Mueller.
In the other episode, Mr. Trump asked his former chief of staff, Reince Priebus, how his interview had gone with the special counsel’s investigators and whether they had been “nice,” according to two people familiar with the discussion.
But don't worry your pretty little head, because none of that rises to the level of witness tampering. And both Priebus and McGahn went directly to Mueller and told him about those conversations, so both of those dudes are totally fine!
Legal experts said Mr. Trump’s contact with the men most likely did not rise to the level of witness tampering. But witnesses and lawyers who learned about the conversations viewed them as potentially a problem and shared them with Mr. Mueller.
Why yes, McGahn and Priebus DO have the same lawyer. WHY DO YOU ASK?
Sure, if those interactions with the president went down exactly as described, they probably don't constitute witness tampering or an attempt to obstruct justice. But it's not a GOOD LOOK for President Impulse Control when his lawyers undoubtedly told him, "Do not discuss Mueller's investigation with potential witnesses! You're in enough trouble already!" And more to the point, asking McGahn to deny Trump's efforts to fire Mueller is evidence of a guilty conscience -- you don't try to bury evidence of something unless you know it's a crime.
But whatever happens to the president, rest assured, McGahn is in the clear. He'll either go on to an illustrious career practicing law, or be canonized. And Reince will be fine, too, as long as he doesn't get arrested for prostitution.
Allies of Mr. Priebus, who left the White House in July 2017, have cautioned him to keep his distance. But Mr. Priebus, who is seeking to build a law practice as a Washington power broker who can open doors for clients, has maintained contact and occasionally visited the White House to see Mr. Trump and his own replacement, Mr. Kelly.
