Here in San Diego, I wish to vent about PD47 allowing Iran to "wipe us out." Letting us all get killed seems a bit harsh. Although I can see his point. 4 out 5 Congressional Districts here are Dem, and expected to stay solid Dem, the 5 th is predicted to turn blue next month as well. He is turning Independents into Democrats here. Good Job Tubby.

But I am not the least bit afraid of getting wiped out. We have the 1st Marines at Camp Pendleton, and THREE aircraft carriers stationed here, including the Lincoln who would like some payback I'm sure. Not to mention a lot of combat ships and the Pacific's submarine fleet here as well. Plus a ton of former military people retired here who remember how to pull a trigger.

Anyway, that's all I have to say about that.

The Republicans are trying to legitimize Trump's criminal regime with phony prosecutions. So far, I think the only one that got traction was the neocon John Bolton, who copped a plea, ironically for the same crime as (one of the many) committed by Trump, who was saved by SCROTUS and the election.

We're making pot roast of foraged lion's mane mushroom, lots of veggies (onion, shallot, garlic, celery, carrot including the teensy ones from our garden, parsnip, turnip, tiny potatoes). good Portuguese red wine, homemade veggie stock. lots of herbs, and the first ingredient, love. You're invited.

OT: Someone posted over the weekend, surprised to see network tv ads during NFL games for Paxton, even in games that didn't involve any Texas teams.

Others noticed it too. And, as I suspected, it was the only option for the PACs to run ads. Many local stations already have ad time booked and those with slots open are hella expensive right now. So, throwing Paxton ads on network NFL ads, where most viewers aren't even in Texas, was the cheapest expensive way to get their message out to Texas voters this close to the mid-terms.

So, yeah, desperation move.

The GOP idea of a "man" is someone who insults women, can't tie a necktie, doesn't pay his bills, can't drive, eats McDonalds, cheats on his wives, and who wears spanx and elevator shoes, while sporting fake hair, fake teeth, and a fake tan. You know -- an incel who has to use money or violence to get near any woman. Someone who has the conversational skills of a four-year-old.

Lawyers for a former Olympian who was cleared of charges of vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool are asking internal government watchdogs to investigate the conduct of senior Justice and Interior Department officials, accusing prosecutors of indicting him despite knowing that a renovation of the pool was failing.

In a letter sent on Tuesday to the inspectors general for those agencies, lawyers for the former athlete, David Hearn, say the agencies ignored their own evidence in a rush to satisfy President Trump’s desire for criminal charges. Prosecutors then provided a court “blatantly false” information about when they became aware that the real culprit for the badly peeling liner in the pool was a botched renovation overseen by Mr. Trump, his lawyers wrote.

“Because of the actions of various D.O.J. and D.O.I. employees, Mr. Hearn was deprived of his liberty, indicted for a crime he did not commit, threatened with incarceration of up to 10 years and endured the defaming of his name and reputation by high-ranking government officials,” Mr. Hearn’s lawyers wrote. Among the lawyers requesting the investigation is Michael R. Bromwich, a former inspector general at the Justice Department.

Ta, Evan. Photos from the Power to the People concert were the first time I ever saw a smile on Jack Smith's lovely face. He was having fun. To quote Patti Smith, 🎶People have the power!🎶

We're waiting for the cutting board to dry so we can do prep for our foraged lion's mane mushroom pot roast. Onion, garlic, carrots, tiny potatoes (including a few from our garden), parsnip, turnip, homemade veggie stock, red wine, herbs and spices -- all cooked in our beautiful vintage cast iron Dutch oven. Someone had discarded the Dutch oven on our block in the East Village. It had a tiny bit of rust inside the lid; quickly remedied. Beloved Meccalopolis researched it online. It's from a foundry in Chicago that burned to the ground in the 1930s. The great things people throw away! We'll let you know how our pot roast turns out. We already know it's going to be yummy.

William Donnell's avatar

Sounds wunderbar.

I have a silly mental image of employees tossing meat and veggies into the Dutch oven as they evacuate the fire.

JunkYardDogg's avatar

I never used parsnips & turnips.

What do they taste like?

marxalot's avatar

whatever you soak em in, and a bit sweet

EyeQueue's avatar

JunkYardDogg's avatar

I will have to give’em a try.

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

A really good Dutch oven is a thing of lasting beauty. Everybody wants my old yellow one.

Zyxomma's avatar

We don't covet your old yellow one, because we have our beautiful old black one. I was shocked and amazed that it still had the handle, in perfect condition. The tiny rust spot on the inside of the lid was its only flaw, and that was remediated quickly. We are so very happy to have it!

Bitter Scribe's avatar

I love pot roast, and as soon as it gets really cold, will get off my ass, go get a Dutch oven, and cook me some.

Anyone want to recommend a particular brand or whatever? Also, what's a standard size?

Zyxomma's avatar
1mEdited

I don't know where you live, Bitter, but check your local thrift shops and Craigslist. I'm always amazed when I find cast iron at one, but I suppose the people whose chore it is to clean out Mom's place don't know how to use it or care for it. I found ours sitting on top of a garbage can on our block. We've used it to bake bread and beans, and it's perfect for pot roast.

JunkYardDogg's avatar

I got a Food Channel one. Was a reasonable price. Probably got it at Kohl’s. They do have sales once in a while. Don’t get one too small. Visualize a decent size roast with veggies capacity.

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

Mine is about a 14-inch diameter, unbranded and beat to shit inside.

Smoke O'Possum's avatar

We got a fairly inexpensive one, Our Home or somesuch name. Works great!

Bitter Scribe's avatar

Yeah, I won't sweat it. It's not like it's high-tech equipment.

Our_Man_In_Redneckistan's avatar

Get one with a ceramic lining, not nonstick. It’ll last forever.
