My state is having such a hard time attracting teachers, they recently raised the starting pay to $40,000. We paid $30,000 a year not long ago, and we're running budget surpluses.

I’m a big Beau fan as well. He has such a great way of explaining historical and political concepts.

This happened in the 1980's, but is a true story. My then boyfriend's older sister, a college student, was being stalked in Pittsburgh by a college boy from Texas. They had had a couple of dates but she found him too possessive and controlling and told him she didn't want to see him any more.

He decided he had to follow her everywhere and call her many times a day. He was undeterred by anyone--her two brothers, friends, or her father and mother, who called his parents living in Texas. Finally his parents got him to come home for a weekend, presumably to "talk some sense into him."

While the young stalker was gone, my boyfriend's sister was packed off to England by her parents (because her father was born and raised in England and had family and other connections there). Practically overnight, she had had to withdraw from school, pack her bags, and sneak off to England to live with a family of close family friends.

The boy came back and kept coming around to the family home, asking about her and calling, a lot. They repeatedly told him that she was "gone away" and if he didn't stop, they would have him arrested. Finally the police were called and they talked to him. He left PA and returned to Texas, where he jumped off a bridge and died by suicide. His parents called her parents to tell them what happened. They broke the news to their daughter and she was able to come home and re-enroll in college after a period of therapy and adjustment, but this episode haunted her and made her very reluctant to date anyone for a long while. She felt lucky to be alive and not physically assaulted. She felt a lot of things.

The youngs call it rape culture. Go ahead--talk to any female adults you know--you will hear some things.

Putting the main issue (the misogyny) to one side, is there a special Census Bureau for Wingnut Statistics?

“The betas applauded and realized that if 20% of the men get all of the women…” Um, source, Incels?

Then he should have been fined for violating the masculinity leash law. Oh, don’t have one of those either? Well, hell, nobody could have anticipated it…

Well, unless you’re Black, in which case you’ll end up shot by the police either way.

I’ve seen this happen. A counselor was fired three times for abusing patients and he was still rehired.

Small world! I've been at an HPC storage vendor for about 20 years. :-)

Several years back, ${HDD_VENDOR} invited several of us down to their headquarters for a day full of technical discussions and deep-dives. I learned all about what HDDs are doing internally, both when servicing a host request, and during internal operations.

I didn't sleep well that night. 😱

On the one hand, you're right: everything is crap and it's a miracle that any of it works at all.

On the other hand: it does in fact work, a ridiculously large fraction of the time! It's just that an Uncorrected Bit-Error Rate of 1 in 10^15 sectors, is actually not that great when individual devices have 10^10 sectors and there are waaaay more than 10^5 of those devices out there.

${TINY} x ${HUGE} = ${LARGE}

Also too, we by nature only pay attention to the stuff that breaks, because the stuff that's working doesn't do anything that's worth paying attention to. That skews the perception as well.

Well, we have a Supreme Court justice that would likely be denied a job teaching in high school (probably any school) given his history of possible sexual assault and admitted history of drunkenness. You don't remember the fact that he coaches (coached?) his daughter's basketball team?

Andy Warhol, right? Although I might be thinking of the American Horror version of the story (so may not be accurate).

Yep. Humor was one of the greatest discoveries in R&D.

So the best example is 50 years ago! That’s very convincing that they are exactly the same thing!
