Yup. It’s also why he gets confused and infuriated by people who can’t be bought off or fooled. He assumes everyone else is as much of a scumbag as he is.

Jonah's little tweet reminds me of a story I heard from a friend of mine who is a rape survivor. She was attending a weekend retreat for survivors, and one of the talks they heard was about how one's family will tend to minimize the trauma the victim experienced--anything from utter denial that it happened to saying, "Well, at least it was date rape..." Horrific.

Over a lunch of fried chicken, the women were relating stories of how this had happened to them, except for one young woman who remained completely silent, contemplating the fried chicken breast on her plate. Suddenly, she stabbed the chicken breast with a fork, lifted it up and yelled, "Fly, sucker, you're not hurt that bad!"

Because they have nothing else and their only goal is power for the sake of power, just like O'Brien in 1984 explained. They don't want to govern, that's a lot of work for little personal reward, they just want power.

I really wish Ken Burns would do a documentary about Reconstruction and how it ended. It would be a worthy follow-up to that other one about the war.
