He can't go to the Super Bowl because it's too far for his old rotting bones. Meanwhile, there's finally a real conversation about boycotting the World Cup.
Our dumb right-wing president gets rebuked by a judge who was appointed, ah, by a Republican president years ago. This shit is funny. I love it when the president has problems.
So, Siri played this song for me in the car earlier today, and it was driving me nuts trying to remember where I'd heard it from. I hit teh googles when I got home, and went "Duh! How could I have forgotten this one?"
The song is "Ruugu no Dengon (Lipstick Message)", and it's the song Kiki's listening to on the radio as she flies through the night, looking for the perfect town to do her apprenticeship as a witch. I found this version on YouTube that includes lyric subtitles in English and Vietnamese. I'd never seen the lyrics before, and was surprised that a bouncy little tune in a movie about a young girl going out on her own for the first time is a song about a woman leaving a message on the mirror in lipstick to her cheating husband!
PAB's been relentless in stoking hatred in his cult for her, I'm surprised it's taken this long for something like this to happen. And I'm relieved it wasn't worse -- this time.
But can Trump ruin the finest, purest sporting event in history? I am speaking of the annual Croquet match between the midshipmen at Annapolis and the freethinkers at St. John's, across the street. It is the ultimate in Athens vs. Sparta, played for nothing but bragging rights, and steeped in tradition. Midshipmen turn out in their finest uniforms, their dates in Belle Epoch dresses, while the Johnnies dress as slovenly as they can, although sweatpants are kinda frowned upon. St. John's has never had more than a few hundred students, while the Naval Academy has an enrollment of nearly twenty thousand, yet somehow, St. John's always wins. For a CENTURY.
I think it’s a deeply complicated issue, whether other countries should refuse to participate in international games here. There are very good arguments for both sides. Certainly, this regime has alienated us from the rest of the world in shameful, dangerous and ugly ways. Who could blame athletes or entire teams or nations from wanting to participate here. But also there is the argument that unity, mutual respect, fair competition and tradition are more important than Trump and his cruelty. These dedicated athletes can rise above what’s happening here, and compete not for Trump, but in spite of him. There is power in the brotherhood that international competition brings, especially FIFA and the Olympic Games. The Games can be a powerful platform too. These athletes can join hands and denounce this regime and its cruelty. Stand together with representatives from all corners of the globe and insist that love, unity and diversity will prevail.
Incidentally, my wife and I took our son to Disney World and Universal Epic for the first time this week. We were happy to see Disney offered several rainbow pride themed park entry badges. My wife and I each chose one. I hope Disney never, ever stops celebrating diversity as loudly and proudly as possible. Not every attempt to embrace diversity has been well received, even by liberals and the LGBTQIA community. Disney isn’t perfect by any means. But there are still places where thousands of people work hard to be creative and make people happy, and there’s value in that. However corporate and wealthy Disney may be, there are worse missions and legacies out there.
The problem is that you genuinely can't guarantee the safety of your athletes or anyone who wants to travel to support them. In the past, dictatorships that hosted events like these were desperate for legitimacy, so they toned it down during the event. Trump is squandering whatever legitimacy America had already earned, so there's no reason to expect a lull in ICE/Border Patrol bullshit during the World Cup.
I don't care about The Cup or The Olympics, but I feel bad for people who do like them and the revenue that will bbe lost because of one toddler dipshit.
I don't think I even want to know how much revenue the US tourism/hospitality industry has lost due to the actions of the orange shit stain. It had just barely recovered from the pandemic.
TIL, from a glimpse on a TV ad, that there is a man named Robert Maddox, aka the Rocketman, who builds pulsejets and mounts them on go karts. And he'll do it for you, too, if you have the big bucks to pay for it.

A dreadnaught is also a style of acoustic guitar. The top of the body (technical term is upper bout) meets the fingerboard bend at a right angle.

Agreed. It’s not without risk and will require people with plenty to lose to be brave and subject themselves and their families to the cruelty here.
For a sporting event. To make the corrupt people who run FIFA richer than they already are. I don't know that that's worth it.
I imagine ICE will spoil that too.

I was disappointed to learn he and Salieri were actually good friends.
Stupid Hollywood movie.
But they left out the car chase scenes.
And the Uzzi gunfight.
