Yeah, this was still a thing at my school in Phoenix in the late 90s/early 2000s. I was a competitive gymnast when we had to do it in 8th grade, and I beat a fair amount of the boys in pull ups and stretching (not running though, distance running sucks especially in 100 degree heat), and no one accused me of unfair advantage either in then-super red Arizona. This is an entirely new sick hobby horse among the right wingers, and it is so dangerous and harmful and infuriating.
It's going to make kids keep their true identities secret from their parents. Not to protect themselves from an unsupportive family - but to protect their supportive family from ideologically motivated destruction by the state.
Loving parents who want to support their trans child risk serious criminal charges and losing ALL their children to foster care. How's anyone supposed to make that kind of choice?
I see what you're saying - hoist them on their own petard because it's the only possible way to make them realise how monstrous their laws are.
I can also see the argument that repealing the laws is the only way to prevent harm to the hundreds of kids who'll be harmed by them; so if targeted harm to a few Republican kids achieves that, it's a net good. Greatest good to the greatest number.
Not to mention that THEY'RE happy to weaponise the suffering of children, so why should WE hold back.

Health science (NIH) has ignored gender for too long. NIH rarely invests in research examining problems related to what amounts to a developmental disability. There are almost no researchers studying the genomics of gender anomalies most of which are occult rather than visible (excepting the rare hermaphrodites). Why is that? I know of one grad student who was actively pressured to change fields because of his interest in gender research.
Without more study, family physicians often are unprepared to deal with gender dysphoria. For some kids, it appears that their gender dysphoria is a temporary hormonal problem that they grow out of as their bodies mature. Sadly most cases are not temporary.
Of course there are babies born with male genitals but also a poorly formed vagina or vice versa. Fifty years ago, the physician delivering the baby might just fix the problem surgically on the spot by suturing the vagina closed or removing malformed gonads - sometimes without parental awareness. It is only when the surgeon prepares for a sex-change operation that the vestigial scars are discovered. I have read a case report years ago of discovering a vestigial uterus among an outwardly-appearing male seeking sex-change surgery. Now that the Human Genome project has enabled science to study such matters that could lead to prevention or more effective interventions, gender anomalies remain a career 3rd-rail for many in health research.

Boys past puberty can run faster, throw farther (shot put, discus, javelin), etc. Very few events would ever be won by girls/women. Check the record stats. When I was a senior vet lightwieight rower (50-54) I was faster on the erg than any open class lightweight woman and I was slower than a number of my peers. Some of them (55 year old amateur lightweights) were faster than the open class heavy woment, who were much larger. Even in table tennis, top men will defeat top women. THe best in the world, the Chinese, staged male/femaly matches in their olympic qualifications . The women were given large handicaps and the results were still about even. You can watch the matches on youTube. Bobby Riggs beat Margaret Court while he was in his 50s.Everyone can compete but not men against women in the vast majority of sports. Non gendered sports are overwhelmingly unfair to female athletes. Yes girls /women become place kickers. I have never heard of one going out for guard or tackle however. There are rational and convincing reasons for gendered sports.
