I lived in Carlsbad, North SD County for 3 decades before I retired in Thailand 6 years ago. The place was paradise and I truly miss the sunsets. We never had weather like they are experiencing now. Truly saddening......* it's still the best part of SD County.....just sayin'......
My go-to response to the promulgators of client disinformation is the tried-and-true Steve Martin DIY divorce method: In the presence of the individual and reliable witnesses, repeat "I break with thee, I break with thee, I break with thee!", and then toss a pint of dog shit onto their shoes. Even more official if they are barefoot.
I'm really looking forward to hot rain this Sunday and Monday. Now that's going to be a lovely experience. We're a god damned desert and rain is supposed to be cold and infrequent!
The ignorance is astounding to think that western world's Northern lands will somehow become ripe for agriculture once the climate warms. Oh great, more land to colonize. I guess they didn't learn about the Canadian Shield and black flies.
I can't believe there are still climate deniers out there I live in a very ruby red area of upstate NY on Lake ONTARIO and no one denies climate change here! They still use the other stupid arguments though it's too late, it will be too expensive or the best I can't vote for people like that because they'll take my guns. Ridiculous I know but up here that's the excuse for everything the left wants that would be nice but they'll want to take my guns away, nevermind I've been hearing that for 50 years and no one has taken away anyone's guns yet and we live in NY the bluest of blue states!
For some reason San Diegans are complaining about the humidity THIS summer. It's been humid EVERY summer for at least 10 years! There was a time A/C was an afterthought. Now, warm days and cool summer nights are gone forever. Can't live without A/C. East coast no-nothings say, "oh, 72 every day in San Diego." Correct if it was 1959, 1967, 1972, 1984. Not any more. I thought I left this crap behind in the midwest....
I don't run across many climate deniers in south Minneapolis. When I do, I turn the conversation to gardening. And I always make sure to remind gardeners of a certain age about the conventional wisdom of tomato planting at latitude North 45°.
When I was a kid in the '70s, the rule was that tomatoes weren't totally safe outdoors until Memorial Day, and every day after Labor Day was borrowed time. So Minnesota gardeners wanted early varieties, 60-75 days at most.
Now we can plant the first week of May, and are almost certainly safe from frost until mid-to-late September. I've gotten away with planting in late April.
I'll ask if their 100 year old house is having new wet basement and roof issues, like mine. The ice dams that didn't used to be a major problem on house roofs. If the fact that our houses were built to hold in heat is costing them more in air conditioning, when we used to be able to get things pretty tolerable with window fans; as the dew points were a lot lower. If they've noticed the rising overnight lows in winter. The rainstorms in January, between cold snaps.
And I'll ask when was the first time they saw opossums in the neighborhood. It was less than 10 years ago. Or I'll ask if they've noticed the stress and increasing die-off of pine trees.
They do. But it's not climate change, see. It's...well...the climate is changing but it happens all the time. And there's nothing we can do about it because we have to have cars and cars have to run on gasoline.
Oh Brooke, I too remember Portage Glacier when you were within a few feet of it in the parking area. I was stunned when I returned for a visit after years away. Tears were the correct response.
a relative recently treated me to a harangue about how there's no climate warming and the UK isn't even keeping track of it any more, or whatever the hell this was about, i wasn't really paying attention. if anybody knows what he's referring to, i'd be happy to hear because some other day, when i'm up to it, i intend to address this.
Not at all. Your non-comment triggered a memory of, very recently, having read something in The Guardian or on BBC about how it was the hottest summer evvahhh in the UK this year. And across Europe in general.
I live in "Not SoCal" but definitely within the sphere of influence. I'm in the Owens Valley, where Mulholland stole all the water to make Los Angeles bloom. They own most of the land here and all of the water. We get to buy a little water back from them, and rent the land. I 'member the last hurricane whose remnants slammed SoCal, Hilary, in 2023. Being 250 miles north of LA, I'd never seen it rain as hard as it did for over two days straight. I can't imagine how bad it got down below. Good luck, Brooke!

I knew a guy who claimed the midwest would be like a tropical paradise, growing those crops instead of the current ones.
He, of course, hand-waved away my mention of all the wonderful tropical diseases and pests that come with the paradise.
